Official stuff that needs to be done before moving on K-1

Hi,

I'm going to be moving to the US in just a few short weeks - can't believe this bit of the journey (K-1) is almost over! :-)

I'd like to make a checklist of sorts for all the "official stuff" I need to do before I go. Any ideas? Currently I have:

File P85 with the Inland Revenue

Notify my bank that I'll be using my debit and credit cards abroad

Notify Student Loans Company that I'm moving abroad

Close additional accounts (savings, ISA)

Thanks for the help.

Regards, inhopeofglory

P85 is like the most beneficial thing out of all the above :)

I dont know 100% but its along the lines of some kind of tax rebate for some/all of this years taxes. Either way its worth filing to see what comes of it!

Cancel utilities, catalogues, mobile phone, provide friends and family with a 'moving home' card with your new details on, cancel gym membership. If you get a fair whack of post, arrange for it to be forwarded by the post office, or leave several sheets of forwarding address labels for whoever is going to be living at your house. I'm going to keep all the promo literature that comes through my door for a couple of months and then call them to tell them to take me off their mailing lists...

A P85 is 4 page form you fill in to reclaim your tax back for the financial year end, providing you are entitled to it that is.

Do you think it better to keep your bank account open or close it down..how does it work using your debit card abroad....are you charged anything to do this?

Thanks for the help...I am in this situation too and find it overwhelming trying to think of everything I should be doing.

I think there's a charge unless you're with Nationwide or something. I haven't used my debit card in the US because of this, I've kept it open until I can pay off the overdraft and then will close it down.

I would have a chat with your bank about it.

I agree, it's very overwhelming...and I'm not the one moving! lol My fiance is keeping his bank account open so he can still transfer money to pay off his credit card. As Gemmie said, you are charged a fee using a card abroad, so I doubt he'll be using his. Plus when we go back to visit and if we decide to stay an extended period of time, at least he already has a bank account set up in case we need it. Good luck with the planning and the moving! As stressful as it is now, it's going to be SO WORTH IT!! :)

My husband kept his nationwide account so that his dad can transfer bday money and things like that. Nationwide is nice, no charges. Llyods cost my husband a fortune to use the first summer he was here.

Definitely keep it open, even if it's only got a £1 balance. Never know what life's going to throw at you and it's worth having a UK banking identity should you ever want/ need to go back. It also helps if you have relatives that want to give you money at any time but they can't really cope with getting their head around international banking!
