Married or honeymooned in U.S. territory on K1 visa?

Just wondering if anyone here has been married or honeymooned in U.S territory outside of the 48 states? Like Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or somewhere like Hawaii? These are all considered part of the U.S.A. but require passports to travel and return from there. If you did, were there any issues coming back through customs when you returned?

Yes it is possible. US territories and possessions are the same as the United States. That is why you never see a Puerto Rico flag on these pages. Just be sure to go directly from the mainland US to these destinations without entering other countries

they are call the lower 48 but Hawaii and Alaska are states that will make it 50 I think and you do not need a passport to travel to puerto rico from Miami it is a national flight

Huh? I never used a passport to go to Hawaii or PR. Never went through customs either.

Everything I have read says that if you are a non-US citizen, you will have to go thru customs when you return back to the port of entry, even for Hawaii. Technically we wouldn't be outside of the U.S., and the one time entry on the K-1 would still be okay because we never left. I just don't want any ugly surprises.

Where did you see that?

I know a VJ couple from the east coast who were married in the Virgin Islands a few months ago. No problems, obviously.

K1: 01/15/2009 (mailed I-129F) - 06/23/2009 (visa received)

Yeah, I don't get it. I'm not even sure when or where someone would ask you whether you were a US citizen. There is no passport control desk when returning from Hawaii or PR. Who would even ask you?

If a US citizen doesn't need to carry proof of citizenship, how could they control anything anyway?

"Are you a US Citizen?"

"Yes."

"Can you prove it?"

"No, I left my passport at home, because Hawaii is a state."

Then where does the conversation go after that...?

I guess you might need your passport as an ID so that the airport personal can confirm your identity.

Flying to Hawaii is no different then flying to Florida, NY etc... so absolutly no passport is required... PR and USVI are US territories and as such do not require passports to visit.

My husband and I got married on St. Croix in the USVI. He travelled with his K-1 visa and his passport of course. We had no issues coming back through customs. The IO just told us to make sure that we filed the AOS after we returned to the mainland. Should you choose to marry and/or honeymoon in the USVI just make sure that you stay on the USVI, and don't travel to Tortola or any other non-US territory. Travel to Hawaii shouldn't be an issue because it's a state.
