This may be a stupid question, but my fiance and I are applying for a K-1 visa. One of my friends read somewhere that if my fiance is approved for her K-1 that we must marry in my home state. I'm just curious if this was true or not? Currently, I'm living in CA but I am soon moving to IL for medical school, and we may get married in IL.

Your friend is reading in the wrong place. You can get married anywhere in the USA.

You can get married in any state. Bear in mind that some states have residency requirements. Illinois does not, but non-residents will only be issued a marriage license if the marriage would be legal in their state of residence. You can read about the general requirements for marriage in Illinois here:

I think this point is mute since he will be living in IL if they are married there, but I think this is mostly trying to fend off people who live in states with requirements such as not getting married within 6 months of a divorce in their home state (like Nebraska does, for example).

Here's the official state site for marriage licenses (for Cook County) if you have any questions: http://www.cookctyclerk.com/sub/marriage_licenses.asp

BTW, your fiancée would only have to provide her birth certificate and her passport as proof of ID to get the license. :)
