hi folks. it's me again.

i was wondering how everyone is planning on moving all their stuff to the states. is there a special moving service for those going through the visa process?

is mailing stuff worth the cost?

I used Uhaul... cost $800 from the GTA to Philly area.... plus gas. There are many different ways to move your stuff, Uhaul is the only trucking company you can drive yourself, one way from Canada to the US

We used ABF U-pack http://www.upack.com/, it was $1500 from Edmonton to Charleston SC. That gave us six feet of space in a semi which was enough to move the contents of our one bedroom apartment ( we stacked boxes pretty high). If you need more space it’s an extra fee per foot (I think around $200). The drawback is that you have to pack and unpack your items yourself, but they were way cheaper than all the other moving companies we checked so we went with them. They helped us with the customs forms as well.

I got rid of most of it.. kept my clothes and the irreplaceable stuff...

wish I would have kept some of the kitchen stuff though had to buy new stuff once I got here, hubby hardly had anything

yeah, it really depends on what you have. I got rid of everything big. No furniture what so ever. I also downsized a lot in my clothes department. I had four medium sized boxes and packed pictures, books, and anything I could fit into that I wanted to keep. I mailed two to Tim and they are both here now, my son is mailing the last two.

When I flew down, I had two big suitcases, and a carry on. All with my clothes, and any extra goodies I wanted right away, ( immigration files, taxes,etc) I also checked a box that contained three wall pictures that I didn't trust mailing. Although the airlines lost it, they were able to track it and I got it the day after I arrived and all fine. I haven't checked the boxes yet, but they look alright. The boxes are probably about $70 each, and I flew American Airlines, and they rob you blind for checked luggage!! So I won't tell you what I paid cause wow!! It was a lot !! Ok, Ok... $15 for 1st bag, $25 for 2nd, and$100 for 3rd!! *Gulp*

I packed as much as I could into my husbands car and drove it down! Since you're just moving from TO to NYC (I think?) that would probably work for you... or the U-Haul if you have a lot of stuff.

Will it be a problem at the border that I have 2 vehicles with my stuff? I just figure we'll all go into secondary.

We hired professional movers - I had LOTS of books to bring. They determine the cost based upon the weight of the load and the distance you travel. They need to have a copy of your processed visa and I-94 to show at the border before they can bring your belongings over. We faxed them to the movers and everything went smoothly.

I moved from TO to NYC and I just brought the essentials (mostly clothes and shoes) in 2 large suitcases, a carry one and then I bought a huge duffle bag in Chinatown in Toronto (At Sky Trading on Spadina) for $8.99 that fit pretty much almost everything I needed.

Then I researched all the airlines and found that with Air Canada, my two first bags were free and if I prepaid for my 3rd online it was only $80 CDN and it could be oversized and overweight...

That being said, I did leave all my books, dvds, any blankets and sheets and most of my winter coats and sweaters and I am going to do a second round of stuff flying in October and then we'll probably eventually drive back to Toronto so I can take back the stuff that doesn't really fit or is too heavy for a suitcase.

haha wow. i guess it's no surprise that the women moving have more stuff than the dudes.

my fiancee is going to give away his furniture and things like that, but he is a musician and has tons of instruments, pedals, keyboards...his computer. expensive stuff. that is too heavy to take on a plane but much less than a studio apartment worth. we're trying to figure out the best course of action. :\

17 foot.... It was packed as much as it could be, including the passenger seat as I drove my car to the US. My car was also packed!
