Some basic questions about health care

24 members have voted

  1. 1. When your primary care physician sees you and writes you a prescription, what should he/she charge?

    • He/she should charge their actual cost of providing service and not one penny more. No one should make a profit on health care. The physician should find another way to put food on the table for his/her family.
      3
    • He/she should charge a very small amount more than their actual cost of providing service. I realize there has to be some profit in health care, or else why would people be doctors in the first place? But there's no reason they should be any better off than your average plumber. It's not like anyone forced them to do all those years of med school.

    • He/she should charge whatever he/she feels is appropriate. I, as the customer, should have the choice to see any doctor I want. They have a right to make as much money as they can and I have a right to see whichever doctor I want. This may end up costing more, but it's fair. And people will actually go to med school so we won't have a shortage of doctors.

  2. 2. Who should pay for your health care?

    • I should pay for my own health care either directly or through an insurance pool. It's not fair to force others to subsidize my care.
      13
    • I shouldn't have to buy insurance and I shouldn't have to pay for my own care. Health care is a right. The taxpayers should pay. After all, we're all in this together.

    • I'm willing to buy insurance but my costs should also be borne by taxpayers outside of my insurance pool. After all, we're all in this together!

I find it difficult to come up with the private health insurance payments for our family here in the USA, but I recognise that we are getting excellent care for what we are paying, and also for what I am self-paying for this pregnancy (which is not covered by insurance due to pre-existing infertility). I lived in Ireland, with a public health care system.. I'd rather pay through the nose for a good one!

I'd rather pay through the nose for good health care as well.

I do not like my public health care at all.

I can't even see my doctor for another 2 months if I wanted to see her... and I need to.

Not to mention my city has no walk in clinics.

Not to mention my city has no walk in clinics.

Which city?

There are 4 walk-in's within 5 minutes of me!

Some tiny little town called Woodstock, lool.

There's two clinics, but your doctor has to belong to them.

I can go to the one, but it doesn't even open till 5pm.

There's nothing I can go to during the day.

Hm, I don't know. I'm sure there's more doctors around Toronto, but there's also enough people for them.

As an example of how hard my doctor is to see, I called today because I needed to see her about this heat rash/hives/whatever it is. They just came back from 2 weeks vacation.

They had 200 phone calls yesterday and now she's fully booked for almost 3 months.

I think she has at least 1000 patients, her wall of files is huge.

It really doesn't help that here people go to the doctors for the stupidest things like a cold, which she really can't do much for them

So what do you do about the rash? Self-treat with OTC topicals? The rash will likely be gone in 3 months.

I've just been taking Benadryl to stop itching. I don't know what caused it.
