...i was wondering whether to buy travel insurance to last me a month or so before i can get on my fiances medical insurance?

Travel insurance is generally only available for visits to the US rather than immigrating here. Unless of course you want to risk them exercising their right to repatriate you to your home country rather than have you treated here in the US :eek:

It can be a cheap alternative but be aware of the risks.

Check what is available locally in terms of free or reduced price healthcare. Presumably, you will not be working immediately upon your arrival??? In that case here in Philly Crozier hospital runs a clinic where if you are unemployed and uninsured you can see a doctor for $10 and that includes any bloodwork or tests needed. I understand that other hospital have similar facilities.

I have always taken out insurance when travelling and never needed it, but i will look into what you have suggested!!

What kind of insurance to get for the few weeks before getting married...

I've seen a thread here about a couple getting into a bad car accident like 3 days after arrival who ended up with a 17k$ hospital bill...

I've found some Health insurance designed for expat' here, but it's a year contract, I need to call them....

It's like 1k€ for 3 months tho...

I'm surprised it's not a common topic here...

I bought travel insurance for my wife when she came her on the K1. Seems to me I wrote something on that about 3 years ago here ...

Here's what I posted before, in Sept 2007:

When I brought my wife over on her K1, I bought a major medical policy for 90 days for about $240.00. We didn't need to use it. So I have no idea how good it actually is. Now she'll enter on a K3, but insurance isn't an issue anymore. She is now on my employer's medical policy and by the time she enters, the existing conditions exclusionary period will have timed out. (It has already timed out.)

The coverage we got was only for major medical. She had a minor illness while she was here. We went to an Urgicenter and I paid out of pocket.

Seven Corners offers policies for new immigrants. We got my wife a 4 months policy, to last until she has her EAD.

These types of policies only cover emergency items, not day to day visits.
