Does fiance attending K1 interview make a difference?

Been haunting these boards less regularly than before now that the K1 has been sent but I was wondering a few things and hearing some reassurance or positive feedback from members that have had their fiance attend their interview with them would be nice!

1. Did they ask you (USC) any questions as well?

2. Were you allowed to go to the window with your fiance to hold their hand?

3. In your opinion, did it make a difference towards a positive outcome? ie were less questions asked or proof asked for relationship.

4. What did you wear????

My fiance is planning to come down for the interview stage. Initially he wanted to be down for the medical as well, so he could wait for me in the waiting room but since the time between medical and interview might be spaced out too far and he cant afford to take much leave for work, we settled for just the interview. We have tons and tons upon tons of proof but hoping they'll cut us some slack with him being there with me.

So for those that have jointly attended the interview, any feedback or words of advice?

Based on my experience

1. Yes, the consul did ask my fiance

2. Yes, but that will depend on the consul if he will let you be there for your fiance

3. Yes, he didn't give me a hard time but then again, depends on the CO.

4. Casual wear, just like going to a job interview.

The best thing I can tell you and probably the most beneficial is you have to read the embassy reviews that fellow VJers may have posted for your specific country's embassy. Go check out the Reviews Embassy or USCIS POE and find the country your significant other is from and read the latest and greatest there. Fellow VJers are quick to give in depth reviews there, down to what line to line yourself up at, what clothing to bring for the type of year, what the embassy personnel expect of you, and even what some of the CO names are so you can be ready for the types of questions they ask. I know whats in store for me for Colombia.. at least for the most part :).

Hi,

Oh I've read each review at least 3 times over

The problem is, not many Malaysians file for K1 etc, I think in total we have 8 this year so far. So there arent as many reviews as I'd like. Also, not a lot of them had their fiance/spouse present.

So I am scooping into the general knowledge well of VJ for their experiences. Hope to get a bucket full of good ones.

1. I attended the interview and was allowed to go to the interview window. They didn't ask any questions of either of us. Typically they will not ask questions of the USC. Do not speak unless spoken to, it is the applicants interview.

2. Yes

3. It made a difference for her. That is more important to me. It made no difference in our decision as they obviously already made that before they called us to the window...no questions asked

4. Casual business wear, slacks and shirt, no tie, I'm from Vermont, there are no ties here. Alla wore a nice, but not fancy, dress.

I never heard of anyone regretting going to an interview, even if they don't let you in is great moral support for your fiancee. How many guys will go half way round the world for a 3 minute interview? Besides you DO NOT want to miss out on the celebration afterward. :P

I'm with Gary on all points. #3 is the most important. Whether you are allowed at the window or not, the emotional support to your SO, regardless of the interview results, will mean the world to your SO.

I attended my fiancée's interview in Manila. The Embassy may be closer in operation to yours than some others. I was glad that I went, and I stayed until Ana got her visa and could return with me, but I am not sure whether it mattered in our case. But, I am positive that it didn't hurt. Considering how much love, time, and money that we already had invested, I decided that I wanted to be there. But then again, I might just be a control freak ;)

  1. I was asked if I knew any of her native language, and how to say "Good morning". I passed that test.
  2. I was allowed up to the pre-screener window, but not into the interview room with the Consular Officer.
  3. In my opinion it probably helps. After all, it is hard to question the validity of the relationship when the petitioner is there.
  4. Casual dress. A pair of Columbia slacks and a collared polo shirt.

Good Luck!

Dear Leo and Farah

First I'd like to say congratulations on finding each other, and good luck with the completion of the K1 process. Mine took a full year from filing of the I 129F to the interview, but on June 28 we got off the plane together in Florida and our dream has begun.

I went to be with Maria in January of this year, while awaiting Vermont to finish with their part of the approval process. Our NOAH 1 was on May 27, 2008, so when I arrived in Manila on January 18, 2009 Vermont had my Petition already for over seven months. I was determined to bring Maria home with me, and had already decided I was going to her interview, so when I arrived in January I was committed to stay as long as it took; even, if that ended up being forever. The NOAH 2 finally came on March 27, NVC about six weeks later, and the inteview finally on June 10 (you get to pick the interview date by the way).

In my opinion being at the interview had a positive effect on the outcome; in fact, I am certain it did. I've been in sales for many years, and I know abouut these things and can sense it. The pre screener actually called me up to the window. I made certain he saw me by getting into his line of vision, as opposed to sitting a good distance away from it like most other men did. When he asked Maria to call me to the window, he said to me: " I saw you standing there, figured you were the Fiance, and thought you could be helpful with some questions I have" After the Prescreen I went with her to the seats outside the interview room, and when she was called in I stuck my head inside and asked if I could sit in. The interviewer was polite, but said he would call me if he needed me. The interview was longer than most, but I already expected it to be. If there is going to be a swing vote, so to speak, I feel the Fiance's presence will provide it. Let's face it, one of the key issues is whether or not there is a true relationship. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words; isn't it locigal that your presence will speak volumes?

Good luck.

Carl and Maria
