Philippine senator angered by Alec Baldwin's joke

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Actor Alec Baldwin's joke about getting a Filipino mail-order bride provoked a sharp response in the Philippines, with one senator saying Monday that the "30 Rock" star faces violence if he ever visits.

Baldwin, 51, who is divorced with a teenage daughter, said in a May 12 interview on "The Late Show" with David Letterman that he would love to have more children.

The Emmy-winning actor quipped that he was "thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point ... or a Russian one."

Baldwin has been involved in a bitter dispute with his ex-wife, Oscar-winning actress Kim Basinger, over custody of their 13-year-old daughter, Ireland.

Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla said Monday that Baldwin's comment was "insensitive and uncalled for" and an insult to millions of Filipinos.

He called the actor is "arrogant" and said he is apparently unaware that the Philippines has a law against mail-order brides.

"Let him try to come here in the Philippines and he'll see mayhem," Revilla said, using a local idiom that implies the speaker will personally administer a beating.

The senator himself is a former action-movie star who occasionally still appears on Philippine TV.

This coming from a womanizer who fathered 80+ children with different women. He has no right defending the image of the Filipino woman. Filipinas can better defend ourselves without his help.

while his comment is not in good taste, there does not seem to be a backlash over Letterman's comeback... " get one.. get one for me.. for later.."

Totaly agree! I have actually met him. (I live in Cavite) While Baldwin's comment was a bit insensitive....I know he meant no harm. And Revilla threating a beating is just as ridiculous as what Baldwin said.

That said face the facts....there is a negative sterotype in the US against men who fall in love with and marry women from SE Asian/Former Eastern Bloc countries. Its wrong, disgusting, and stupid...But trust me.....I hear the 'mail order bride' comment at least once a week, about my own beloved Filipina. I just laugh in their face and say "what....you Jealous???"

I guess many of us Filipinos were fed up being the underdog... It is easy to ignore such statements, but if we don't what will they do? Do it again? Insult our glorious heroes the OFWs? the Filipino immigrants in their adopted country? To the westerners it is quite common to encounter such jokes and they are quite matured when it comes to criticisms (better watch the cable channels that feature shows from the first world countries). Culture clashes when it crosses borders and it is best to ignore other opinions from other cultures. A protest letter from the consulate would be enough.

"Our Wedding Prayer"

Lord, help us to remember when we first met,and the strong love that grew between us.

To work the love into practical things so nothing can divide us

Grant us a Love that grows stronger with each passing year.

We ask for words both kind and loving

and for hearts always ready to ask forgiveness as well as to forgive.

Guide us to overcome every challenge

and keep our dreams pure to each other always.

Dear Lord,we put our marriage into Your hands.Amen

If your heart acquires strength, you will be able to remove blemishes from others without thinking evil of them.
