Nearly 2,000 people in Mexico have been hospitalized with serious cases of pneumonia since the first case of swine flu was reported two weeks ago.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano defended the government's response at a press conference Monday afternoon as reporters asked her about the risk of asymptomatic swine flu carriers entering the country.

Napolitano said the strategy of identifying and isolating those who seem ill and try to cross into the United States was adequate given the circumstances, as a reporter asked if closure of the border had been considered.

Given their unwillingness to close the border, if the swine flu situation worsens, this will be played by the media as a worse blunder than Katrina... the strength of the public health arguments in favor of passive monitoring notwithstanding.

Creating a bigger and worse Katrina would be a much worse blunder, politically, than hating brown people. Heck, a full one-third of Americans hate brown people (Republicans).

I second that.

I read there was an earthquake in Mexico City. I haven't seen any reports about widespread damage, but I've been wondering if the response will accelerate the spread (at least in mexico).

I don't think this could ever become comparable to Katrina. Katrina was the result of the denial of decades of reports, simulations, and requests for additional resources (by republicans and democrats) to which a very poor response and biased media reports added insult to injury. I can't even begin to describe the failure of "recovery" in the Gulf region.

I think this administration is doing a good job managing the developments so far. They have mobilized the medication stockpiles, the have enacted enhanced screening of potential flu cases, all the while keep things in perspective and not inciting a panic.

What is closing the border with mexico going to do to prevent swine flu? Swine flu is already present in the US. If it is going to be the pandemic they are concerned with, closing the borders might delay it from certain areas but it wont prevent it. Air travel and the fact that the virus is already in the US makes that impossible.

The quake was downgraded to a 5.6 last report. Enough to be felt, not big enough to do any severe damage.

I just heard on the radio 450 are dead in Mexico from it and I came online at home to look for that again but I'm not finding it right now but I clearly heard it. 2 more cases were confirmed in Scotland.
