My wife just went to our local SSA office to update her SSN status to that of Citizen. She took her certificate and a completed SS5 form. The guy looked at all the forms and input some info in the computer system asked wife for secondary ID, so she handed her State DL he looked at this and then asked her for her GREENCARD!!!!!! The wife explained she is now a Citizen and does not have a Greencard, The guy got a bit heated and insisted that she must have a greencard and if she did not have it she would have to come back another time with it before he could update her SS records.

My wife asked to speak to a Supervisor and the guy told her that a supervisor would not be able to help, at this point my wife got a bit anoyed and demanded to see the manager. A lady came over and said she was the manager and how could she help. My wife explained that she was updating her immigration status to a Citizen but the officer was demanding a GREENCARD. The Manager said she would need to check with someone else and went off to make a phonecall.

When she came back to the window she said that they could accept it application to update without a Greencard as long as my wife had anoth form of ID.

I can not belive that these people do not know the basics of their job. What a sad sad state our country is in.

As wife was walking away from the window the guy shouted that she would recieve her SSN in the mail within 6 weeks?????? #######!!!!!!

Oh well I guess things will never change.

Do not think this kind of thing is only applicable to the US. I am sure your wife can relate to similar things happening in this country. We do not have such a system of green cards we just let anybody in  No joking aside I am sorry she had the trouble she did, she is now a citizen and as such has her full rights now and that transition is indeed worthwhile.

Best wishes to you both

OMG! Do we have to print out the meaning of LPR and Citizen from the USCIS website, then educate these morons about how to do their jobs? Only LPR carries GC as proof of legal status being able to live/work in US, citizen won't need the GC anymore and only need to carries state DL as proof, plus she has the naturalization certificate with her, which part of it they don't understand? I had a run in with SSA a few years ago as well, my major thing was about going to different SSA at different time would have different result, sigh, seems like they'll never change, staff there still under-trained. Thanks for posting your experience! I will definitely try to find those definitions and print them out just in case I run into the idiots shire.

My wife already has a passport and there is nothing to update at the DMV, she just has to check the Citizens box next time she renews her DL.

Having a Passport would not have stopped the guy asking for a Greencard.

My thought was if you have the passport, you can show them both the passport and the naturalization certificate.

The underlying problem is that they rely on a database that often isn't updated. My wife and I had a pretty good dust up with Social Security when she tried to get the DHS Authorization restriction removed. It took us three months and a meeting with a supervisor to get it resolved.

Ouch! I sure hope I won't have that kind of problem. Sorry to hear your experience. Any advice on how to handle SSA?

It really depends on the office and the person assigned to your case. The first time my wife applied for her card, she had no problem. It was only when she applied for the unrestricted card that she ran into problems.

The one piece of advice I'd offer is that you always have the right to speak to a supevisor. If they can't talk to you right then, ask for an appointment. Be calm, polite, and have all of your evidence with you.

I had the opposite problem.

When I was here during college for a 4-month internship on J1 I obtained a SSN and got a social security card.

Needless to say, the card got lost when I went back to Italy.

A couple of years later I came back here on H1B and I asked for another card.

I showed them my visa and passport and sure enough, two weeks later I got an unrestricted card. They saved me the trip when I got my green card.

Anyways, I never inquired. I wouldn't be surprised if I already show as a USC in their database....

Wow! That's good, they even saved you a trip. I guess that really depends, but it seems that they'll never get things straight, either "someone should have but didn't get to have" or "someone who shouldn't have but get to have".

I applied SSN back when I was FI. My card has the words "allow to work with INS authorization only (or something like that)". I never went to get a new one that doesn't have those words because I have the GC, GC is the authorization, so as long as I use the SSC and GC together, shouldn't be any problem. But I do plan to update my status with SSA and have them give me a new SSC when I get my naturalization certificate next year.

To OP:

 What the...?? It's bad enough the guy didn't know that US citizens don't have green cards but then to yell at you on the way out?? They must have an extremely laid back office...

The above is not legal advice.

It is either from research or merely my opinion.

That is too bad. i was in and out in like 5 minutes!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

When applying for my first SSN card at the tender age of 16 (I'm a USC), I was asked for my green card! This is despite presenting my US passport and birth certificate, both of which clearly state I was born in Connecticut. The worker also spoke to me verrrrry sloooooowly so I could understand what she was saying. She was totally flummoxed when I replied in what was then a Locust Valley Lockjaw accent, "But I was BORN here. How could I possibly have a green card?"

I can only put it down to my highly ethnic maiden name.

Now that sounds extremely bad  . I didn't know it would be that bad. But at least I'm preparing for the worse since I'm reading the forum here. I don't think I would be surprise now if they ask me for the GC, but what can I tell them to make them believe me that USC doesn't have/need the GC? It's just such a primary difference in definitions, I thought all governemnt agencies would know, especially SSA who handles SS benefits. I'm really not sure what to do if someone at SSA ask me for the GC that I would have handed back over to USCIS in exchange for the naturalization certificate at the oath ceremony. Anyone got any good advice?
