Married To A German :)

I have noticed that the German community has their own thread with many replies that would take me years to read (because it's in German). How about those of us whom are married to a German man/woman?

Anything you would like to talk about or get advice on? I know from time to time I would like to air some concerns/comments.

So lets make this the Married to a German thread where all of the Americans whom are married to Germans can come and discuss our thoughts and issues.

YAY! There are more of us!

I made a post on the German thread quite some time ago and I stated that my German is bad. I got a quick response from all of the friendly German's on the thread, but it pretty much said something like "Oh, you'll learn German quick enough and be able to chat with us."

Bummer. That was in, I think, December. It's now April and, yes, I speak more German than before but still not enough to have a full conversation in German.

I will definitely be subscribing to this thread. :)

And, yes, I am married to a German man.

Benny hadn't been to the Dr in 20-ish years before the K1 process. So, he was diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Benny has started to complain that he can't eat anything now. I'm a picky eater myself so it's difficult to figure out what I can fix for us to eat now.

Let's start with desserts. Does anyone have suggestions for simple desserts that would satisfy a German appetite?

Okay, I'm not married yet, but don't count me out. It's coming soon (hopefully this summer). My future in-laws speak little or no English, and I speak no German (kinda busy atm to be learning it). I always have felt left out of the German thread because they have no tolerance for English speakers.

My fiance liked anything with chocolate on it. And never had cool whip before. Oh, and Dairy Queen brownie earthquakes. Try those?

Those have all been put off limits because of his cholesterol....

How about fruit smoothies (fruit + non-fat yogurt + juice)? There's quite a few recipe books you could purchase (I have one myself). My German man loved those, too. You can also make chocolate ones using hershey's cocoa powder or syrup without adding cholesterol (like chocolate, banana, milk, yogurt).

I have been told the same many times by my wife. While I have picked up more than I ever thought i would, I am still by no means anywhere near fluent enough to carry my own in a conversation.

I guess your really have to submerse yourself in a culture to truly learn the language.

I too was diagnosed with high B/P about seven years ago due to a kidney disorder. It was my wife who encouraged me to go in and get checked. I have found that by limiting my salt intake and cola I can control my B/P fairly well in addition to medication.

I have some very simple rules I follow for salt and cola.

No salt or cola at home. I only get salt when we go out to eat because they put salt into everything for you premade and I only drink cola when we are out and about. If there is salt at home on the counter I don't even touch it.

It was hard getting my wife to make her special dishes without salt but now even she agrees that everyone can add their own amount of spices and salt after the fact.

I am married to a German man too.. oh and by the way, I can't speak much German at all.. It's quite depressing. I say I'm going to learn, but never do...

I'm in the same boat. Your not alone.

That German thread can be a tough cookie to crack. They truly have a zero tolerance policy.

@ the remark about "zero tolerance for English" -

As I already said in this thread, I had posted in English on the "German thread" about wanting to be able to chat with everyone there. I received a quick response, in English, that I would be able to pick up German in no time. And that was that. Nobody was rude to be for speaking English in the "German thread."

And, @ cassi9879:

Like I said before, FRUIT SALAD.

I would think it is good for the High B/P problem - no salt. You can even make a low-fat fruit salad. Lots of recipes online, take a look.

I guess your really have to submerse yourself in a culture to truly learn the language.

I completely agree with you on that statement. If you are not taking a language course via a college or whatever, you will not learn the language so easily. I definitely consider myself to be "submerged" in the German culture, aside from the fact that my husband and stepchildren speak English. I help them learn English and they help me learn German.

I really have learned a lot in the 9 months that I have lived here, but again, it's not enough to carry on a conversation alone. I can START a conversation with strangers, but I find myself turning to my husband to help me out when I am struggling with a word or sentence.

I am the same way. During high school I took German as my foreign language only because Spanish was full and French was not my cup of tea. I find it funny that a class I so hated in school is now such as large part of my life.

I'll let you in on a little secret......in high school I was actually suspended from school for three days for making hand jesters to the German teacher behind her back. I have since visited that teacher with my wife and made my formal apology.

I was wondering what the 'bash the German Thread' thing was all about. There's another thread a little further below here...same topic.

If you write in english, we'll answer in english..if you never write again then we will just continue in German. After all though...everybody is always more than welcome to post in the German thread.
