Short Term Insurance for Canadian in US

My fiance' is coming to the US on June 16th or 17th. I just found out from my employer that he will be covered under my insurance starting the date we get married, which is one month to the day of the wedding. Is there an insurance carrier that anyone is aware of to do short-term basic health care coverage during those 30 days?

Can he not purchase Travel Insurance back in Canada? i'm not sure what the ins and outs are since obviously he isn't just 'visiting' for those 30 days

When I used to work in the US, I had to have a French insurance that would cover me internationally. I could get one just for one month.

I'm sure Canada has something like that as well.

I used The Co-Operators.

Since he's Canadian, he should be able to find a place within where he lives.

I got 3 months of insurance for like 160 dollars, and it covers full hospital visits for up to 5 million in coverage.

Tell him to look into that one.

They're friendly and the price is great for what you get, and you can get it for any amount of days.

I used CAA for 2 months. Had to go to the hospital and although it took 4 months, they did pay the bill.

I myself and wondering this.

The thing with purchasing regular travel insurance in Canada is that he HAS to have an active OHIP card. If he is moving, and wanting to be deemed a non-resident then he possibly will be planning to cancel this. Travel Insurance WILL NOT work if you do not have OHIP.

What I plan to do, is to perhaps get travel insurance for the time I am not covered (not 100% how long that will be, maybe 30 days or so as well), and NOT cancel my OHIP yet. Technically, I would not be a US resident fully until I have all my AOS completed (I have NO idea if this is accurate, just me thinking I know more than I do, so double check )

I used to live overseas and when I traveled in SEA I used Worldnomads. It is through the Lonley Planet so you know it is legit. I never had to file a case though so I don't know how easy that is. And, I am not sure if you need a valid OHIP card or not.

My advice, get regular travel insurance, tell him NOT to cancel OHIP yet. I am sure he can do that with a letter once he is all settled and insured under your provider

As far as I know, OHIP doesn't cover out of country? I got sick a few times while in the US over the years and I had to pay out of my own pocket. My dad's SUPPLEMENTAL insurance helped us a little bit but we had to incur most of the costs.

I meant that I HAD insurance at the time but I got sick March 27th, and am waiting for all the paperwork so I can file my claim. I need to have OHIP for that claim so I don't want to cancel it before I am finished all that hoopla.

You are correct, OHIP does NOT work outside of Canada.

I have a similar problem (health insurance coverage doesn't start right away). My FIL put me in contact with his insurance agent and she did a search for me. She recomended a plan from the "International Medical Group." Click here for the link. The plan is under "Patriot Travel Medical Insurance" and then is the one called "Patriot America" -- for non US citizens.

You can specify the length of your coverage; I think it goes from 10 days to 2 years.

ETA: You can fill out the form right away online- very convenient!

How foolish would it be to walk around without medical coverage for 50 days? That was my plan... But I have little to no understanding of how the US medical system works. Is it so stupid expensive that if I need to go to a doctor once in those 50 days I would be better off getting coverage? Or maybe... is it not legal to walk around without coverage? That would be kinda weird, but I've heard weirder things...

Honestly, I'm 21 and I haven't been in a hospital since the day I was born. I don't think I'm going to need one...

Nope u dont have to have insurance, millions of Americans do not!! Just see a Dr isnt going to bankrupt you, but if you get into an accident and rushed to hospital will!
