Prominent Orchard Park man charged with beheading his wife

Orchard Park police are investigating a particularly gruesome killing, the beheading of a woman, after her husband — an influential member of the local Muslim community — reported her death to police Thursday.

Police identified the victim as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37. Detectives have charged her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder.

"He came to the police station at 6:20 p.m. [Thursday] and told us that she was dead," Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz said late this morning.

Muzzammil Hassan told police that his wife was at his business, Bridges TV, on Thorn Avenue in the village. Officers went to that location and discovered her body.

Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.

The killing apparently occurred some time late Thursday afternoon. Detectives still are looking for the murder weapon.

"Obviously, this is the worst form of domestic violence possible," Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III said today.

Authorities say Aasiya Hassan recently had filed for divorce from her husband.

"She had an order of protection that had him out of the home as of Friday the 6th [of February]," Benz said.

Muzzammil Hassan was arraigned before Village Justice Deborah Chimes and sent to the Erie County Holding Center.

This man needs some new friends, and for his nasty deed, he can go and have a nice tour of some of America's finest prisons. After he spends some time with these men, he wished he cut his own damn head off.

He can try and hang with this nice guy, he is looking for a new friend.

He can join some groups and enjoy their company, they love men that cut women's heads off, they have special treatment for them.

Get good free meals, and nice little room hopefully with a nice room mate.

What ordinarily would be a horrible domestic violence crime has now been associated with being muslim and on down the slithery slope to terrorism

Promoting the muslim culture is a separate issue to domestic violence. Domestic violence is at least as prevalent in US society as it is in any other society so this has nothing to do with his being a muslim, nor should it reflect badly on the overall muslim community. This is yet another example of sloppy thinking.

It does imply certain stereotypes. But this is a muslim man and muslim women do not typical share the freedoms of western women. She had a restraining order against him and filed for divorce. Now in many instances this behavior exhibited by both parties has resulted in spousal homicide in ALL cultures.

A sword wouldn't cut someone's head off. It'd most likely get halfway through and become lodged in the spinal column. Maybe a claymore might be able to do it, but it would require a massive amount of force.

Look wherever you like for the causes of domestic violence - there is certainly no commonality between being poor and murdering your spouse. What you will not find is a link between his job as a promoter of better muslim relations and domestic violence. That is as I said, sloppy thinking.

In absence of the facts it is fair to look at all factors. His being a muslim promoter is very pertinent to the fact that he is clearly a serious member of the muslim faith, a faith which relegates women to a lesser status.

I don't know the facts and I really don't care if he killed her because of muslim pride or a drunken sex-fest gone wrong. But to dismiss the story as bum-thinking because it noted his prominent employment activity, and religion as not important to the actions... well

Sorry, you are not getting it. I am no expert on being muslim by any means, but there is nothing to my knowledge inherent in being a muslim that makes one more likely to engage in domestic violence, and the more devout one is, the less that should be true. I think you have mistaken muslim with something else.

depends on the sword and the man swinging it. many different types of swords in existence. prolly the best sword for cutting a person's head off would be the Chinese dao type, which may have a blade as wide as 6", and is single edged. it is designed as a chopping weapon, not for thrusting. a good dao can weigh up to 15 pounds. i have a jade dao that is as sharp as a razor and weights about 12 pounds, in about 36" length. one blow to the side of it, and it's a pile of shards, but it would sever a head if correctly swung. chinese executioners sometimes used jade dao on special political prisoners in the classical period.
