Hi everyone...

Sorry if this topic has been discussed multiple times, but i can't seem to get anything useful when i do a search.

My husband is adjusting his status now from a K1 to permanent resident and i can't seem to find any health insurance company that will insure non-us citizens. i need to get him an individual plan, as i am working two jobs part time and to add him to my insurance through work would be ridiculously expensive. i'm looking for just a bare bones plan, with an unlimited (or very high) lifetime maximum and a $2500 or so deductible. just to cover the real emergencies. he needs this for school and it would be just for the meantime, until my job goes fulltime or until he's working.

anybody have any experience with this...what did you guys do?

kate

Cant help with any info.... sorry

I ended up going for 4 months without medical insurance until I was working.... good luck in finding something...

Kezzie

Go to ehealthinsurance.com. I just insured my husband with a Golden Rule policy, and it was approved. They did not ask about his citizenship status. Some of the other companies (blue cross) did ask. They also have short-term insurance that's pretty cheap.

I came here on a K1 and when I married my SO he put me on his Group Health Plan, I am soooo grateful that he did as I ended up going to ER last night. I think it is very important that you try to get some sort of health plan for him no matter what the cost, as it might end up costing you more in the long run.

Since hubby was working as a freelance employee he wasn't insured either, so we both went with Blue Cross Blue Shield and I don't recall having had any problems at all. I think all they wanted was my SS# and then I got coverage.

If you can't be added to your spouses policy, then ehealthinsurance.com is the best site to go to. Blue cross blue shield do a lot of policies which you can apply for with your spouses SSN. Personally I'm holding off until i'm working, but its a good site!

Well I am sooooo glad that I got added to my wife's work (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) policy last year, even though the extra premium for me is $367 a month !! I am 58, however. 'Spring chickens' might come 'cheeper' ;);)

I have since had major shoulder problems and an MRI Scan alone, a few weeks ago' cost $1,470 ! Fortunately, my co-pay for that was $70. I still have a $2,000 a year out of pocket limit and no dental cover either.

My advice is take the best insurance you can get, and afford.

Good luck......Neil.

Thanks for all the advice! i will definately check out ehealthinsurance

i also checked out www.wallach.com which is especially for people in eugines (and many of you) situation. it's $5 a day with the HealthCare America plan, and coverage is $100,000 for 3 months. then with HealthCare International it's a million dollar limit and $170 or so premium, and you have to buy a plan for 6 months up front. the only catch though, is if the permanent residency comes through, the health insurance is no longer valid. no refunds, no ifs ands or buts. its great coverage though. (well, it had better be for $170 a month!!)

just thought i'd throw in that info.

still researching...

Thanks! I will check out this site... I hope they ensure high risk individuals that are yet abroad..

I must obtain health insurance for my spouse as a prereq. for visa issuance (currently medically inadmissable)
