Was looking for something else and came across this useful brochure from CBP/Customs & Border Patrol.

It explains most everything about moving your personal and professional items to the US with you including your automobile!

When you are first coming to the US, you are considered a Nonresident/First-Time Immigrant in their language. Details for you are on Page 31, but the list before that applies to you as well.

Yeah, I've been refrencing that link for awhile now... But it's always helpful to get it out again...

Oops :blush: funny isn't it, how some people think of everything? I confess, it never occured to me to look into this in much detail when we were moving back. I guess becasue we were bringing only things that would fit in a suitcase? We did ship some small boxes ahead by regular mail & I must've checked at that time....

Ennywez, I'll have to add that to the DCF Guide in the Moving section.

What I *was* doing a cbp.gov was looking for the entry requirements for immigrant visa holders---can they do their first entry before the US travels to the US. I didn't find anything on cbp (unless you have some hints for me??) but related to the I-864 instead of the visa. Upshot seems to be: The immigrant may NOT enter before the USC sponsor/spouse. In case you were wondering. :)

I saw this post and the info has been a huge help! But I was wondering if anyone has ever brought thier car into the US?? It would be across the border between Mexico and the US. We are hoping we can just take the car with us after the interview since its in Cuidad Juarez and that way we wont have to sell our car and buy a new one in the us. (plus the road trip would be fun!! :D ) Ive already looked for info at Customs and the Dept of Trans. websites but wanted to know if anyone has actually done it.

June 30th - Recieve RFE on I-864.

Oct. - Mailed RFE with new I-864

Sept. 13 2006- Approved and sent to embassy (how before I even fixed the stupid RFE I dont know! And yes I checked with CDJ and they recieved it)

July 9 - recieved emial with interview date

My family brought our cars down when we originally got our green cards & didn't have any trouble at all, not even questioned about it. Oh - and I was just scanning the link the OP suggested and it discusses cars on pp. 11-12.

Anyone here have experience with US customs bringing gifts? For non-residents, you have to declare it if it is valued over $100. I am asking specifically about jewelry, ie. wedding ring. If you declared a gift, how much was the duty and taxes?

Any dollar amounts or articles above $1,000 will be dutiable at whatever duty rate(s) apply to the merchandise.
