you cannot claim him as a dependent but you certainly can consider filing Married Filing Joint. This is by special election and you must also claim his income as if it was US based income

you dont claim him.l...he is a co-signer of the return...it is a joint return. By all means, use a SSN...IT WILL SAVE YOU ALL KINDS OF GRIEF.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

The sort answer, yes, you have plenty of time, and filing for an an automatic extension could give you until August to file. Whether or not to claim your husband as a dependent for 2008 depends on your situation, his income, any support you provided, etc. Filing a joint return may depend on whether me spend any time together in the US during 2008, or how much time you spent together as husband and wife outside the US. There are other options.

A spouse is NOT a dependent. There is no place on the form to claim him as such....you each get a personal exemption when you file as MARRIED filing JOINTLY

She can also file as an unmarried head of household for 2008, and claim her husband as a qualifying dependent.

Please re-read the regulations.... in the OP's situation she CANNOT do this...

Your spouse is never considered your dependent.

I am not stepping into this one! Don't rely on the tax advise you get here at VJ. Go see a qualified tax professional.
