now when does the SSN number arrive?

I checked off that I wanted to apply for it when I submitted my visa paperwork, so it should automatically be on the way, no?

Do they usually arrive around the same time? Should I be worried? I've been here just a month now. My perm resident card came a couple of days ago, but pretty much can't do anything without the SSN. :crying:

If you have the time and live close by, I suggest going down to your local social security office. Bring along with you your passport and they will be able to look on their system to see if your details have made it into the system yet and if you have been assigned a number. If you have been assigned a number they can give you a print out then and there and your card should arrive soon after. If you havent been assigned a number you should be able to re-submit an application

Hi Burnsis,

I went to the SSA Office 4 days after I arrived here (even though I checked off the box). The girl at the office said that I had already been entered into the system and printed off a piece of paper which had my SSN. That way I could open a bank account etc.

So I'd totally agree with kaffy - head into the office and at the very least they'll be able to give you your number so you can start regular life things. Make sure you bring in your green card as ID.

The actual card didn't show up for 2 months for me (troubles with the mail). I got it a couple of days ago actually.

Hope this helps.

Many people who checked the box in their DS-230 never received their SS cards in the mail, my husband was one of these people and we had to go in person to "re-apply".

I think they should just take that box off of there.

My husband also had to go down to the SSA office.
