I'm taking a research course towards my Master's degree and have to do a business report this semester. The question I am exploring is whether immigrants to the US are able to obtain jobs in their career fields, at similar levels once immigrating to the US. My initial assumption is that for skilled technical workers and those from English speaking countries there will be high numbers. If you could please please help me out and complete the survey I would really appreciate it!!

How many immigrants find jobs comparable to their skill level within 1 year of immigrating to the United States?

1) What is your age?

2) What is your home country?

3) What is your level of education?

a. Didn’t finish high school

b. HS Diploma

c. Technical degree

d. BA/BS Degree

e. Master’s degree

f. Post graduate degree

4) What is your educational field? (i.e. carpenter, engineer, doctor etc)

5) How long have you lived in the United States?

6) Did you immigrate to the US for your career?

7) How soon after you immigrated did you obtain a job?

a. Less than 3 months

b. 3-6 months

c. 6-12 months

d. 1-2 years

e. More than 2 years

8) Is our current job in the same field as your training?

9) Do you feel you are overqualified for your current position?

10) If you answered yes to #9, why do you believe you have not obtained a job at your skill level?

a. Language barrier

b. Limited work history in the US

c. Prejudice by prospective employers

d. General economic situation in the US

e. Other (please provide explaination)

11) Do you believe you will, in the future, be able to obtain a job in the US at your skill level?

OK...so in the first question, you ask for all the infinitely variable input......Name, Age, Time in US, Country, Occupation, etc.

Then you use the other 2 questions with check boxes to identify statements that are appropriate to the respondent.

It would still be more efficient than this method.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

For hubbies first 2 years, here are the answers to match that time frame. He is now running his own business.

Is ur current job the same field as ur training? NO

do u feel overqualified for ur current position? YES

and for #10 - why isn't ur job in ur current field? Because of prejudice and lack of communication skills in English. Nobody was willing to give him a chance in his field when they saw him face-to-face. They would be very excited on the phone but he'd get there and they'd make up some excuse. It took almost 3 years for him to finally start his own business and feel like he is doing what he wants to do. It's slow going but we're working on it.
