So 88% of American tax payers only pay 26% of income tax.

Yet these guys need the tax cut.. Interesting..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

First, that's not surprising considering the distribution of income. Second, I didn't even realize that income tax is all I pay. I thought there are dozens of other taxes out there that I also pay. All taxes taken into account, the picture of what portion of one's income one pays in taxes changes dramatically. That is a discussion, of course, that those that have lobbied to have the tax code written the way it is - that's not you and me - don't want to have.

Do you think giving someone who is already only pays $1,300 in tax is going to improve their circumstances. Not likely at all.

Of course it will. $100.00 a month extra for such person is a big deal.

Absolutely. That's called making the cut proportional to their income. Does that mean they need to lock themselves into that one earning bracket indefinitely? Hell no. There's still the issue of having a government that actually makes upwards mobility a reality and not a 1950s American Dream propaganda machine for working twice the legal work week.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

$100 a month extra would mean they only pay $100 in tax a year.

Whereas I pay close to $57K in tax and get jack ####. Actually my tax will go up..

Rather than lowering taxes they need to raise the minimum wage. As well as lower taxes for businesses and try to provide an incentive for companies keeping jobs in America.

The country does not need to reinvent the wheel.

What they do need to do is look at those other countries that are doing better than the US and start adapting some of their strategies. Everyone else copied America, so it is now time America start copying them.

You are a liberal socialist by suggesting that.

It's a shame that nobody, ever, takes into account that the first bracket, after EIC and receiving $2700 per child "credit" for taxes never paid in the first place, etc, actually pay NEGATIVE taxes. In these tables it appears that the "taxes paid" do not include and are not corrected by EIC offsets. Most families who make $50,000 or less pay NO taxes.

i don't get it.

Minimum wage is a joke in America and needs to be raised. To at least $10 per hour. But this will only work if someone puts a stop towards businesses abusing the illegal immigrant loophole.

No one can complain that this is spreading the wealth either. This is a case of paying another American a fair wage. An ensuring Americans have access to jobs first.

 a former g/f of mine would actually get back about 5k more than she paid in, thanks to all of the deductions she could claim.

I agree. Not just ensuring equal access to jobs, but making sure the jobs are there to begin with.

Anyone earning under $6K should not be paying any tax anyway. You have to draw the line somewhere.

Which can only happen if we give businesses the incentive to do so. America's corporate tax rate is relatively high when compared to other nations. I would lower it with the condition that they pay a fair wage and keep jobs in America. Any business whose majority of employees are overseas should be taxed more, to offset this.
