Suerte!

It is the XXI century and the death penalty is still practiced in some countries of the world with the main objective of targeting the magnitude and scope of the crime committed by an individual. Many governments of the world have decided to use the death penalty with the purpose of minimizing many social evils that harm our society. On the other hand, it can be pointed out that many of these governments themselves have exposed that the effects of abolishing the death penalty will be insignificant on the criminal index, since the abolition will not mend our social issues.

Many organizations work around the globe with the purpose of abolishing this practice, using the declaration of human rights and the dignity of the human being as spears on their crusade. These organizations state that the death penalty is a practice that is not justified in the contemporary world we live in. Already many countries see it as a practice that goes against the dignity of the human being.

One of the organizations that has proclaimed the adoption of a resolution to stop the death penalty is the General Assembly of the United Nations. This resolution would be the adoption a moratorium for executions, which will help the abolition of the death penalty to move forward. Countries in such parts of the globe as Central Asia, among others, have already abolished the death penalty or they have enacted moratoriums over the executions. These days, there has been a constant battle to abolish this punishment. There have been cases when innocence has been proved after a person has been already executed. Nowadays, it is impossible to determinate how many innocents have been executed in the world. Another important point of discussion is the type of execution used by many countries. Each kind of punishment dehumanizes the life of the accused. The resolution drafter by Amnesty International proposes to develop a resolution of moratoriums for such executions, being an important step towards a world free of the death penalty. Nevertheless, this resolution will not stop a state free of sentences.

Opinion

The resolution (moratorium) the United Nations suggests against the death could demonstrate that the human being of the present is better under an ethical and moral point of view than the one from the past. Moreover, this will result on opening the door to a fairer future in a society that has been characterized to accept the legality of the death penalty. This resolution should posses the concentrated support of first world nations, governments, religions, families, schools and media to be able to attack the roots of violence and the diminishing of morality with the main purpose of initiating a process of collaboration with dignity and respect.

The death penalty is blamed by many, worldwide, to be an inhuman act imparted by the state. This punishment is practiced to those that commit a crime or capital felony. This act has been abolished by many countries and by some states in the United States. Statistics show that more than 122 countries have abolished the death penalty. However, more than 60 countries are contemplating such practice. The country with the highest rate of executions is China, where statistics from the year 2004 reported 3400 executions. In my opinion, the death penalty will never diminish the amount of crimes committed on a daily basis. I ask myself, if the death penalty was implemented around the world, would it lower all the problems that affect our society? For example; murders, thefts, rapes, domestic violence, child abuse, among others. The person who is a criminal, will be a criminal. The worst punishment that can be imposed on an individual is to take his/her complete freedom, in jail he/she will learn what it takes to pay for a crime and maybe at some point in his/her life there will be repentance.

I'm against the death penalty. This in an act that completely degrades human life. The dignity of humankind would be forgotten and this could harm in different ways. One of the most frequent errors is to punish innocent people with the death penalty. It is true that we have to think about those who have lost their lives in the hands of an individual, but we are thinking beings, the only one who has the right to take somebody's life is god, not a human. This point of view is very important since the criminal does not have the right either to take somebody's life. On summary, the authorities have to take what is most precious to humans, their freedom.

There are different organizations against the death penalty in different parts of the world. One of them is Amnesty International, an organization that defends human rights. According to Amnesty International, the United Nations plans to create a resolution against the death penalty. This is important because there are several organization already involved with it, these organizations are all against the death. Such resolution should have the concentrated support of nations, governments, families, schools, media and churches, in order to attack the violence and moral decay. We are already on the XXI century, therefore it should not exist any support for such forms of violent revenge, we should promote true social justice and think about the future in a positive way. The moratoriums that pretend to implement such resolution could become a significant step towards a world free of violence.
