My dad had his interview ( IR-5) and got the immigrant visa to US. He'll be coming here in 3 weeks and I was wondering if anybody could tell me when we will recieve the actual green card and social security? Do we need to contact the immigrationoffice or is it automaticlay issued?

Thanks

My wife just came into the country three weeks ago and got her green card in two weeks, she entered on 8/24/2008 and got green card on 9/12/2008. With the social security card, you have to wait three weeks, if you dont receive it from the USCIS then you go to your local SSA office. We went there as soon as my wife arrived, but they told us to wait for three weeks, after three weeks it did not come, so we went to the SSA office and they issued her the SS card. I hope this helps

My husband came in with a CR1 visa and it took the USCIS 7 weeks to send him his green card. They should send your dad his as soon as all his info is entered in the system. If you checked the SS box in the DS-230, then he should get his SS card as soon as the USCIS is done entering his info, without this they can't issue it. Some people have said that even though they checked that box in the DS-230, they never received their SS card and still had to go to the SSA office to get one.

If your dad receives his green card but it's been more than 2 weeks and he still hasn't received his SS card, then go to their office to file for one. After filing, it should only take a week to two weeks to get it in the mail.

If they issued her a SS number and card, it means that the USCIS already entered her info in their system. You can call them to find out if they mailed out her card already. Make sure you're on top of it because they might come back and say they already sent it and make you pay for another one.

My wife got her SS within 2 weeks, 2 welcome letters between 1-2 weeks but no GC, Called USCIS and they told me to wait until 30 days from the welcome letter, whichever welcome letter I choose to use, and then give them a call back. After how wonderful NVC was as far as customer service, and even the consualte was pretty good, I am hating having to deal with USCIS at all now. So it looks like according to them until 30 days after the welcome letter it doesnt do any good to call them, they didnt even ask for her A # or anything. :crying:

They didn't transfer you to a "special agent"? Every time I called to find out what had happened to my husband's card I was always transferred to what they called a special agent. I don't know what was so special about these agents but they always asked for the A#.

They asked me what the welcome letter said, when I told them that it says we should be hearing from them within 30 days she said "well sir it hasnt been 30 days yet so give us a call back at that time". I really dont like USCIS customer service.

I guess they are just doing their job. The letter does state pretty clearly to wait 30 days..

My husband arrived July 20 and received 4 welcome letters - two the same day. Maybe he got one for each hour we waited at immigration in Miami. He received his green card in just about a month's time. The SSN did not arrive even though we checked both boxes. When we went to the SSA office, it had never been issued. The lady said sometimes it is issued and sometimes not. Depends on the person who gets the paperwork. So we applied for the number Sept. 10 and it arrived the 16th.

I arrived United States on 21st August 08, I recieved my GreenCard alongwith all the Welcome letters on September 19th.. I applied for SS at the local office, then I applied for State ID and Drivers license myself. So you have to wait for the GreenCard to arrive.. take a chill pill :P as for the SSN is concerned go by yourself and apply for one they will issue you..
