JetBlue charging $7 for pillow, blanket kit

NEW YORK - JetBlue Airways Corp. said Monday it is now charging customers for pillows and blankets.

The carrier has done away with the recycled blankets and pillows used on its flights, and has started offering an "eco-friendly" travel blanket and pillow that can be purchased for $7 on flights longer than two hours. The pair come in a kit with a $5 coupon to home furnishings retailer Bed Bath & Beyond.

The carrier claims the pillow and blanket feature a fabric technology, developed by CleanBrands LLC, that blocks pesky critters like dust mites, mold spores, pollen and pet dander.

JetBlue already offers free "Snooze Kits" on overnight flights from the West that include an eyeshade and ear plugs.

But the blanket and pillow kit is the latest in a string of a la carte items the company says are providing a revenue boost to help offset the soaring price of jet fuel.

A JetBlue spokeswoman declined to predict how much the sale of these kits will bring in, saying that the company only provides revenue details for specific items in its quarterly earnings conference calls.

The carrier said last month it expects to collect about $40 million from customers buying seats with extra leg room this year. Its $15 fee for a second checked bag is expected to translate into about $20 million in additional revenue. A ticket change fee, which doubled to $100 in the second quarter, is part of a "basket of fee changes" expected to produce about $50 million in extra revenue in 2008.

08/24/2011 Biometrics

08/25/2011 RFE sent to us for some info we've already sent in

08/30/2011 sent in the rest of info USCIS asked for

09/13/2011 went to congressman's office to sign papers for expedite of work permit, due to financial hardship

09/15/2011 Work permit expedite approved!! He can finally find a job!

09/24/2011 work permit arrives

09/26/2011 Apply for social security number!

09/30/2011 Letter is sent for interview

11/07/2011 INTERVIEW!!!

Its 2012 and still no approval! Still waiting

01/27/2012 Letter sent stating that file was sent on for more review :(

It doesn't sound like a bad deal, assuming they're decent quality. I'd rather buy them (or bring my own) than use the drool & snot infested pillows & blankets they used to distribute. Ewwww!

I think the way this has been reported is a bit misleading; even though the articles clearly state that passengers buy these, headlines suggest that people are being charged to use them, like renting those crappy headsets to watch a movie.

Speaking of headsets, I watched Die Hard the other night. I'd completely forgotten about those old airplane headphones that were like a stethoscope. I'm starting to feel old!

Yeah!!! Oh my! Those were the days. :lol:

I usually bring my own headphones...and my own pillow. Lufthansa has been selling sets with ear plugs, flight sox and the sleping mask for a few year snow (five I think), and I was not shocked about that. Also, in the long run, I think it's also good for the environment. Dry cleaning those enourmous amounts blankets and and washing the pillow cases surely is not very green. I would not mind buying a a small blanket for the plane either. A nice cosy babay blanket...much better than an old cratchy airline blanket IMO.
