Health Insurance for fiance before Wedding?

Hi Everyone,

My fiance will be in the US for about 6 weeks before we tie the knot. He's from Colombia. My dad is really pressing the idea of getting him temporary health insurance before he is eligible to come on my policy (once we are married he's eligible to be on my policy). Does anyone have any experience with this?

What did you all do as far as health insurance for your fiances before you were married?

Stories? Help? Advice?

Hi! I don't think that it's possible... Sorry. Nor have I heard of anyone getting their significant other onto their insurance before they were married. Some insurances do partner health insurance but you've got to prove that you've lived with them for a certain number of years (which is not the case with you two).

My health insurance wouldn't dream of it until I showed that marriage license! That we were already married...

Another issue is he isn't a US resident when he arrives. Maybe there is some sort of travelers insurance ???

i don't know what its like with the companies in the countries of your significant other, but in England the travel insurance wouldn't pay up if you had emigrated only if you still had a residence in uk and were coming bk. basically by going over with the intention of staying voids the policy. i have heard of short term policys in America though but i thought they were expensive.

Yes there is temporary insurance. This was just addressed here yesterday and there are some good posts about it if you do a search.

Here's a company it seems several VJ members have used... although, not me.

I got some for my then-fiance through Aetna. I went through the insurance company. It's definitely worth it! I've heard horror stories about people who were uninsured, even for short times. You never know when someone will fall, or get appendicitis or something. He's always been extremely healthy, but a few months after getting here, he ended up in the hospital with pneumonia. I guess it was s result of coming into contact with new germs, the stress of a new life, etc. You can try http://www.buyamericaninsurance.com/ if you need help finding insurance.

I did not have your situation. After waiting for what seemed like forever, we did not need another 6 weeks before we tied the knot. We got married 1 week after her arrival in a Civil wedding and then I added my wife to my policy. Temporary health insurance for 6 weeks? I have never heard of that short a timeframe for coverage. But I'm sure BlueCross will sell you a policy from month to month. However, if you are that worried about having a health catastrophe and being caught uninsured, then maybe you should put marriage at the top of the priority list after his arrival. Make him understand the risks.

I will be married pretty soon and I don't plan to do such a crazy idea, but then again I am an old grown up man. After we get married here in the US, she can be under my health care insurance.

I do not plan to use a temp insurance. My fiancee will have to wait until we marry to get under mine.

what about of a broken leg or some appendicitis kinda stuff... a little risky

I had the blue cross but i didn't really know if they would have covered me or not since i wasnt a canadian resident anymore.... (just hoped for it )
