I am unable to view news stories at work, but I'd hazard a guess that this involves a child who was injured on an escalator while wearing crocs. I have read news articles about this in the past and for this reason I will not allow my children to wear crocs. Then there's the issue that they are hideously ugly. Two very good reasons to avoid crocs.

The story is very sad, but my kids are addicted to crocs, especially my daughter. It seems to me that they are as safe as the user. While sad, there are many other types of footwear that do not offer the protection of say, steel toed boots. Any sandal or flip flop would be just as 'dangerous.'

Seems a bit retarded to blame this incident on the crocs. Little kids should be monitored on escalators.

I would also agree crocs are ugly, but who wears only steel toed boots?

Flip flops, and other non-protective foot wear can also lead to injuries.

Young children, and anyone not paying enough attention, can get injured on an escalator.

The story is horrible, and I feel badly for your friends child, as both a parent and a human being. But to blame the crocs is really a crock!

The problem, as I understand it, with crocs, is that the bottom of the shoe is designed such that it is the perfect size to become lodged in the ridges of the escalator stairs. It seems to me that the shoes could be redesigned to make them safer. I really do believe it is a problem with crocs design, since you do hear about these types of accidents so often with kids wearing crocs.

No one here is advocating wearing steel toed shoes all the rime. I agree not all shoes are safe, but there does seem to be a real issue with the crocs and escalators. And, IMO, that is no crock!

I did the search, and that does seem to be the case i.e. many reported incidents involving crocs and escalators.

But do some more research and you will see that escalators themselves are dangerous, and know to be so, and that footwear getting caught in them has been a problem long predating the advent of crocs.

The article above shows quite clearly how much more dangerous escalators are than elevators. They should always be used with extreme caution and young children closely monitored.

Again, the OP is a sad story. But crocs are not the first footwear to lead to escalator accidents.

Perhaps there is some parental responsibility for this accident?

Some culpability on the part of the escalator manufacturer?

i believe so, old equipment plus these shoes known for this and i prob would have been carrying my 2yr old down to begin with, just something that happen by accident
