hey folks,

I'm studying at the moment for my texas drivers license so that when the time comes when I do eventually finish the AOS process, I can get my ssn and take the test, even though I can drive for up to a year on my UK license.

What are your experiences of the written and practical test for those of you who have taken it?

Thanks,

Kat :luv:

My husband received his texas drivers license 4 months after arriving here. He didn't speak English well at the time and actually failed the written test twice  . Luckily they were willing to give him an oral test with translation. I have had several foreign friends take the regular written exam and practical test with no problems. The questions are very simple! All in all it is VERY easy to pass especially for you since you are a native speaker of English! The only thing to worry about is the parallel parking

I did my Texas driver test within 2 weeks of arriving here, it was quite straightforward and I got a score of 98% for the driving part (failed to stop completely at a signal before red turn on right)

You should check with the DPS as to the validity of your UK drivers licence as I was told it was only valid for me to drive in Texas for 30 days, hence my rush to get it done

You do not need a SS number to do the test, I did it without , just had to fill out a waiver form and all was fine.

I have recently moved house (a year later) and when I went to get a new licence for change of address, I just added my SS number to my information then. (I actually got my SS no. about 2 weeks after doing my driving test)

hope this helps

Driver license information is here:

To get a license without a SS no. you will need to fill out a form DL13 (Social Security Affidavit)

I cant speak about the Texas written test but I did mine for California a couple of weeks ago. I was really surprised as I thought there would be computers with touch screens for the written test, all I had was a piece of paper with 39 multiple choice questions and you have to cross the correct answer. All I can advise is read the handbook several times, as all the questions will be from the handbook. In California the pass rate is 32/39, I got 31/39 the first time but was able to retest straight away at no extra charge. I think you are allowed up to 3 retests. I have my driving test next Monday, will let you know how it went!

My Texas written test was on computer, I think it was 30 multiple choice questions, but it stopped as soon as you got the pass mark of 70%.

Therefore the minimum number of questions is 21 if you get none wrong, but you answer more questions if you get some wrong, up to the possible maximum of 30

in virgina.. the test is on the computer

you have to take two test.

the first on is only 10 questions on road way signs and you have to have 100% to pass if you pass then you go to part 20 which is 25 questions and need 80% to pass

on part 1 if you get too question 3 and then anwser #4 wrong.. that is it.. you fail and end of test.

I went for my DL shorlty after receiving my SSN.

I flunked the written test the first time hehe (some details that are different from Belgium and I wasn't aware that you're allowed to skip questions) I passed the road test fluently.
