In a recent column on TangoMag.com a group of overweight women revealed what seems to be a growing concern among their cohort: That foreigners are marrying women with weight problems strictly to gain U.S. citizenship. And though the assertions in the column were made out of personal experience rather than concrete proof, hard data on "fake marriages" seems to back them up.

Recent figures released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement showed that one in five of the marriages they investigated turned out to be "fake," and that quickie marriages between American citizens and citizenship-seeking foreigners has become a multimillion dollar business. Is immigration too easy? Is America's current immigration system too open or too restrictive

They should:

1. Eliminate VWP.

2. Disallow AOS for individuals here on visitor visas.

3. Strengthen income/asset requirements for the Affidavit of Support.

4. Disallow divorced foreigners with conditional LPR status to remove conditions unless they were the victim of physical/mental abuse.

5. Allocate a sh1tload of new funds for ICE. Use it.

AMEN, RIGHT ON, #2 is so true, DISALLOW ANY AND ALL AOS FOR INDIVIDUALS HERE ON A VISITOR VISA! They should go back and file for K1 or K3 and wait in line like the rest do instead of jumping the line all the time! AND avoiding paying fees for K1 or K3 visas that everyone else has to pay!

VJ Troll here is a novel thought, make these individuals pay $10,000 for filing AOS and wait for 12 months to get GC, then I bet they would stop trying to game the system and jump through loophole and file a K1 or K3!

DITTO!

Especially raise income requirements. Do away with using assets [other than cash money] as I doubt if anyone ever sells their house to live on!

Do away with joint and co sponsors also.

Require tax transcripts as it's easy to fake ITRs.

K1 denied, K3/K4, CR-1/CR-2, AOS, ROC, Adoption, US citizenship and dual citizenship

only $10,000 ??

Bump it to $25,000 to be a real deterrent for attempts to game the system ....

Interesting POV from you Troll? Seemingly pro-amnesty, however anyone here legally should have their legal route to become PR removed. Care to explain?

$25,000 fee would make this an elitist system only for the ridiculously well to do. There may be a problem with folks 'gaming the system.' There may be a problem with people in it simply to gain access to green cards and citizenship. However, raising the fee's simply makes those who would like to do the right thing find another 'wrong way' to do it.

If the VWP was eliminated I would never have had a chance to spend time with P during our dating/courtship days and before the wedding. Not if it as incredibly difficult to get a visitor's visa.

And raising the fee for AOS to $10K or $25K is unbelievable. I could never afford to do that, and I have a good career and am well over the limits for sponsoring P. How would I have the money to save for a new house or send my kid to college if I have to make the decision to pay for AOS or the other? How many people have an EXTRA $10K or more in savings that isn't allocated for retirement/college for kids/house/etc?

going back to the home country and doing the process is much less expensive than $10,000 or $25,000.

Why not be universal then ... how about no amount of $$$$ will permit AOS to correct for an intentional overstay. Returning home and following the process should then be the only way ...

More than making the laws tighter (which they are quite tight anyways) is the enforcement of these laws. We need more people working on deporting the illegals and people who take these laws lightly.

People in LDRs need to use more of theirs heads rather than their hearts and not ignore any 'RED FLAGS'..

Person in a relationship is in a better position to judge their SOs than anybody else..

A raise in the income requirement can help too IMO

I've always wondered how the immigration officials judge "fake". I know lots of americans who marry other americans b/c they're "in love" but have put no other thought into it. And what about americans who marry for reasons other that pure love, like financial security, religious or cultural reasons, or any other non-love reason? If you marry an American you can marry whomever you choose without anyone asking. But if you marry someone abroad for security and companionship, then that is wrong. I don't know. For my part, I never would have gone through the trauma of the immigration system if we hadn't been in love and if I wasn't pretty darn sure we'd stay married for our lifetimes, but still, it's hard to judge others.

And also, what if there are foreigners who prefer women with a little meat on them? Couldn't that be a cultural preference?

I think it would be fine to raise the costs of AOS from a visitor's visa a couple of thousand dollars, but 10,000 is kind of ludicrous, as is getting rid of co-sponsors. A sponsor is a sponsor.
