Not received extension letter but need to leave country!!

I filed my I-751 package in February and received the biometrics appointment for March 20 in NYC, which I completed successfully. The processing check has been cashed, but my green card expired in April and I have nothing, other than my stamped biometrics appointment letter, to show immigration officials when I travel abroad.

I just returned from a brief vacation abroad and was told by the immigration official on the way back in that I needed an extension letter or stamp in my passport or would be charged $545 penalty fee for traveling with an expired green card (she waived it this time, but said if I do it again I'll be charged and I do need to travel overseas again next month).

I've tried calling USCIS but couldn't get through to a person, I've tried writing to USCIS to request the letter but had no response, and I've looked online but can't find anything addressing this issue directly. The immigration official suggested I visit my local USCIS office to get a stamp in my passport before my next overseas visit - has anyone else done this?

Any advice on how I can get the extension document would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Eloise

Schedule an info pass appointment to your field office, and request I-551 stamp in passport, if you don't have the extension letter by the time you need to travel.

Thank you sooo much for the swift and extremely helpful responses - I've scheduled an info pass apt. for next Tuesday, so will hopefully get the stamp then and there.

Have also updated my profile

Thanks to everyone!
