Looking for tried and tested traditional American recipes

Hi all!

As you all know, my husband and I are moving back to Ireland for good in 17 days!! And I'd love to have a stash of tried and tested yummy American recipes.

Some items will not be available in Ireland, so I'll make them from scratch. For example, I've seen recipes for pumpkin pies that use tinned pumpkins...but I can only buy fresh pumpkins in Ireland around Halloween. I've carved pumpkins before and have no idea how you'd manage to get any pumpkin flesh, because it just seemed like more seeds than anything else.

So, if anybody has any trusty traditional...or not so traditional American dishes/desserts/breakfasts...I'd be very thankful

1 cup (4 ounces) Italian blend shredded cheese, divided

2 cups cooked rotini

2 cups coarsely chopped cooked chicken

1/2 cup diced celery

1 (10 3/4-ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup

1 cup milk

1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning

Garnish: celery leaves

Stir together 1/2 cup cheese and next 6 ingredients; spoon into a lightly greased 11- x 7-inch baking dish.

Bake at 375° for 25 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup cheese; bake 5 more minutes.

Mand, I have NO CLUE how to make pumpkin pie without the tinned stuff.

As for 'American' recipies...all I can say is :

2 slices bologna

2 pieces of bread

mustard

put together!

Cant help on the pumkin pie bit, but ya could always pack a few tins to take home, and then have your inlaws shipp some over on occasion, thats what my MIL does for me as there are certain things I cant get here, like Birds custard, bread sauce, etc.

Here's a good recipe for pumpkin pie from scratch. I've made it and personally think it's not quite as good as the canned stuff, but it could be that I just messed it up. Probably depends on how ripe the pumpkin is too....

I have tried a lot of recipes from foodtv.com, and they have all been really good. You can find just about anything there- I used a recipe for chicken pot pie and it was really good! Talk about an American Classic! (I think). Good luck,

Its funny how you go thru life eating and doing the same old things and then you move miles away and thats when you realize the little things that you love and miss, my husband missed so much stuff but mostly Irish sausages and rashers, chocolate (ours doesnt compare) and a few other things i cant really think of off hand, but I get what ya mean about the mac and cheese.

That's the fried potato mix griddle cake isn't it? I've had it years ago, but I don't know how to make it. I don't think it's too common where I'm from. We usually just fry day old potatoes and cabbage...different dish, but tasty!!

you can cheat a little and get a few boxes of a jello no-bake pumpkin pie.

i tried one before and its not that bad... not authentic, but it'll do in a pinch.

or you can try to bake a sweet potato pie instead... the taste is pretty close and sweet potatoes should be easier for you to find in your local markets.

my sister swears by recipe goldmine.

why not try a few simple things like meatloaf, fried chicken, chili & cornbread, and bbq ribs?

My Aidan also really misses "normal" sausage from Ireland...he says that all the stuff here has too much stuff added to it, and he really hated the maple breakfast sausage, lol. I'm a vegetarian, and I eat fake meat sometimes...he actually enjoys the Boca Meatless Sausage Patties more than regular meat sausage.

Mand, I can't think of any tried and true American recipes...most all the food I've ever cooked is ethnic food from around the world! Actually...I really don't like American food!

The "normal" sausage is way much better than the sausage we have here, I had thiers when I was over and it was very tasty, as far as when Niall comes home we will order some from a website I found and they are pretty nice.
