Not just liveable, but make sure to live a certain way to get the most out of the system. Which you pretty much have to since the taxation is insane and any money you can get back is nice. So way less choice in the end. I really don't miss that part.

"We are the real countries,

Not the boundaries drawn on maps,

With the names of powerful men.

That's all I've wanted -

To walk in such a place with you,

On an earth without maps."

In some respects, I think the quality of my life was far higher in Germany than it is here. The only real advantage to me about the US is that I can have a career. Otherwise, Germany, I could live there the rest of my life. YMMV.

Taxation indeed! Sweden and Norway are fantastic and the middle of the road standard of living definately beats the usa. BUT much harder in Norway and Sweden to break above the average. This is much easier to to in USA epsecially as level of education is much more closely related to absolute income than it is in Scandinavia.

I was previously married to a Swede and we lived in the USA. We got divorced and I lived in Sweden for 3 years and got graduate degrees there. Got my citizenship along the way. Now married to a Norwegian.

I see the pros and cons of both. Will definately go back for a while when we have children. Quite nice to have that flexibility.

What are you doing man. I would have been in Norway like yesterday..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Yes. I think parents, for example, receive a bit over $5K per child born back in Aus. Plus a $14k grant for first home buyers. But as you said it comes at a cost. Everyone is living extremely well but it is much harder to live beyond that. Not impossible but much harder.

I know if I was poor in America I would be at one of the above embassies try to migrate there..
