I know this has probably been answered a few times already but you can only read through the forums for so long. We are going to be doing AOS shortly once that is complete, what is the longest amount of time I will be able to stay in Canada before I have to return? Thank you for any replys.

Less than 6 months, no issues coming back and forth.

6 months to a year, re-entry permit needed at POE.

more than one year but less than 2, re-entry permit (prior to leaving)

source:

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Where does the 6 months come from? The link you provided states that absence of 1 year or more requires a re-entry permit.

Improved USCIS Form G-325A (Biographic Information)

Form field input font changed to allow entry of dates in the specified format and to provide more space for addresses and employment history. This is the 6/12/09 version of the form; the current version is 8/8/11, but previous versions are accepted per the USCIS forms page.

Plus they don't know the difference between 'loose' and 'lose' in that reference page - which would make me suspicious

Returning Resident Alien

A permanent resident alien who intends to remain abroad for more than a year should, at least 30 days prior to the proposed date of departure, apply while in the United States to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in the Department of Homeland Security for Reentry Permit. The permit is valid for two years and may not be extended. If such a permit is obtained the alien may use this card to reenter the United States within the period of validity. Every alien applying for readmission must satisfy the immigration authorities that he or she is eligible in all respects for admission. Travel.State.Gov

Look under the international travel section.
