Applying for SSN

Hello everyone :)

I made it here Sunday night around 23:15 :) Trip was very smooth and I enjoyed it a lot (except in NY where I did hit severe thunder storms and could not see anything in front of me on the road). Other than that the rest of the tip was sunny.

POE was in Lacolle and I have to admit it wasn't very smooth as the agent processing my K1 was very new to this (in fact it was his first one and it took about 3 hours to process as he had to read the guide)

Also, they did not want to import my car at POE as they said I do not really have a status in the USA for now .. so they told me to import my car after I get married (that is after they told me to import it from canada and I said "I do not think so" .. lol)

so I do have some questions .

1: Do I need to apply fo SSN prior to getting married ?

2: When I apply for SSN, there are 4 choices on the form at question 3 (Citizenship)

> U.S citizen (obviously not this one for now)

> Legal alien allowed to work

> Legal alien not allowed to work

> Other

So which one do I need to check ?

3: how can I go about importing my car now that I am in Florida as my insurances will run out in 33 days ?

Thanks in avance for your help :)

You shouldn't need an SSN to get a marriage license, just your passport with the K-1 visa in it. However, you may need to sign a form stating you do not have one.

For the SSN form, check "Legal alien allowed to work." Not sure why, but that's what everyone told me to do and it worked  If you were to select "legal alien not allowed to work" you apparently wouldn't be eligible unless you had some kind of documentation for USCIS saying why you need an SSN.

No idea about the car thing! Good luck! :)

Wow. That's some uninformed person at the border.

1) You do not need a SSN in Florida to get married. Go to your county website and look up marriage license requirements. I just took my passport and they were fine with that.

2) To import your car (which, as you know, should have been upon entry) go to CBP - Locate POE and take it to the closest POE to you..... or whichever one you choose for that matter. LOL

And, yes, you are a legal alien allowed to work.

Thx for your answers everyone :)

I just called the closest POE here in Florida, they refused to import my car (once again) and told me I can't import my car untill I get married and have a Florida driver's license

And of course, in order to get my Florida drivers license I need to get a SSN ... I am a bit lost here

So how do you guys did to import your cars ?

Oh good Lord, the incompetence. Ask to speak with a supervisor, or call another POE. Here are a couple of links from their site. In their own words:

If you imported your vehicle by land, you should have declared the vehicle for import and handled the paperwork at the border. If you failed to do so, contact a local port and ask them if they will handle it for you. Port numbers and addresses are available under the ports section of this site.

What do I have to do to register my foreign registered vehicle

Importing a vehicle

(This link speaks more to customs brokers as opposed to immigrants, but there's some related info in there too.)

I imported mine at the time of entry. I came in on a K-1 visa. But I came through a POE that knew what they were doing. Good luck. It sounds as if you're going to need it.
