from VJ TOS:

A post may be edited / removed to remove bad content if:

A person personally attacks another member by using profane language, verbal threats, or other forms of derogatory comments directly at a specific member. This is referring to blatantly derogatory and antagonizing threats, not one made in jest.

Or

If a post involves a person is discussing issues that may cross the line and violate the TOS. Common sense mainly to avoid this.

Or

A post places severe liability on another member, themselves, or the site.

I am just wondering why this isn`t applied, as I am witnessing in basically every other thread I read or wish to have intelligent conversation in, posters completely derailing a thread by expressing their personal opinions not in connection with the original question, in a very unsupportive and even derogatory way...

I assumed when I came to VJ that it will be a safe environment to discuss and ask even potentialy silly questions regarding the immigration process, now I see it isn`t so....

I am dissapointed because, with all the frustrations of the immigration process do we really, on place like VJ, need to be faced with even more frustration and dissapointment sources...

if the members themselves cannot keep a rein on how and where and why and in what way they express their opinions, I believe the administrators should step in since I believe this sort of behaviour endangers the safe environment of VJ much more than posting threads in "wrong" place, for example...

Naturalized! Yeah!

Don't you think you may be exaggerating a bit?

I don't believe the situation is as serious as your post might imply...

If you feel a thread isn't appropriate report it to the staff. There are is a button on the post called 'Report'. It will send a notice to the support staff.

no, I don`t think I am

when I see people posting with honest concerns, problems and worries only to be met with someone expressing their own opinions (which they are entitled to have, don`t get me wrong) in a rather disrespectful way, without any sort of connection to the original "problem" - for me, it is greatly dissapointing

and honestly, if it happened only once it would be happening too many times....

what are we, if we cannot at least show each other a basic level of respect?

true, there are several ways of dealing with posts like those:

1. ignore it (which is very rarely done)

2. report it by the regular poster for whom it is an issue

3. administrator acting according to TOS

my question is why does it have to be left to regular/ average posters to make sure this does not happen, if there are TOS in existence and site administrators with a responsibilty to make sure they are upheld....

I have seen plenty of threads going completely off topic, for several pages where the cause is a single disrespectful and completely out of place post, now according to TOS the administrator has the right, not to say responsibility, to lock that thread....

if it happens that one poster causes several threads to be locked because of derailing in a short time span, then someone with more "weight" then a regular poster, should at least bring it up with the poster...

thanks for the link...

I apologize for redundancy, I only looked up the most recent threads before posting this and didn`t find it in there.....

thanks again

No worries! It's a lot easier to know a thread is a repeat and be able to locate the previous thread if you're on VJ ALL THE TIME, like me!

You need to report threads when you see something that might violate the TOS.

Per the TOS, in part:

VISAJOURNEY.COM DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO MONITOR THE ENTIRE CONTENT OF THE SERVICE (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE DISCUSSION FORUMS)
Any user who feels any Content of the Service is objectionable is encouraged to contact us immediately by visiting the 'contact us' section. In particular, Members are encouraged to report objectionable Content on the Forums by use of the Report feature (a link to the Report feature is below each Post in the Forums). We have the ability to remove objectionable Content and we will make every effort to do so, within a reasonable time frame, if we determine that removal is necessary.

So basically we are not aware of problems until you report it. Please do not be afraid to report things. If we think that something has violated the TOS after seing you report we will address it immediately. As a note, there were no reported threads today. On average we only get a a handful each week so unless people are not reporting things then (I hope) the problem you suggest is not too big. If you feel it is I would Love to help... please PM me or report any thread you find objectionable.

Thanks!

On another forum I go to, there is a particular forum where anything goes. Things like religion and politics are encouraged, stuff like foul language and personal attacks are allowed, and we are just told that if we get offended, to just not go there. That might be a suggestion.... i bet it would be used a lot!

thanks Ewok, reading in the other thread about there being basically one Administrator makes things more understandable :)

reporting does seem like the most viable solution then

Fuzzness, I guess it depends on the board.... I am and was a member of a few- religion, politics and many other "disscussable" topics were encouraged, foul language allowed in some and in some not....however, constantly trying to push your own opinion down someone elses throat in a thread that is NOT calling for it was quickly dealt with

thanks everyone for your replies, VJ seems to function a bit differently- I will accomodate or not go there :P

Worse yet, we get thread stalkers here who surf the board looking for opportunities to push their opinions down the throat.

I, personally, don't think things are THAT bad..there are SOME out of control situations on ocassion yes, but as you say, they can be reported if anyone so desires.

As far as what you said about threads going off topic...yes, they CAN be locked for this, but normally it's not a big deal. I've been participating in one that has gone tens of pages off the original topic in the OT forum myself, and there have been many reference made to the OP stating that it's not a reflection on her or her thread. A few silly comments were made in the beginning to 'lighten things up' and it just snowballed from there....it's not even about that thread for pages now, but it's still fun. So...nothing wrong with that...IMO of course. :) M.

PS..I hope you will come back and post...we have the odd 'bad day', but it's overall a pretty nice group here.... :) M.
