I attended the US embassy in London yesterday (May 4th) and was given approval for my immigrant visa, the staff inside were ideal, efficient fast and had a sense of humor, the total process took around two hours from the time I entered the building and obtained by number. This is by no means lightning fast, but I had been prepared to dig in for 5+ hours.

A few things of note, the security detail are incredibly slow, so definately start queuing at least 45 mins to one hour before hand, do a walkpast first thing in the AM if its busy already I would say queue before that, I only managed to get there half hour before hand due to some unforseen bowel rumblings which resulted in me sprinting from London victoria, so if you saw a very angry man running through london in a pair if combat boots, black shirt and trousers, that was me. This resulted in me being stuck in security until 1130hrs an hour after my interview time.

Keeping your documents well organised is also a very big help at the interview, it doesnt make a good impression when your leafing through 30 plus sheets of paper to find a single one so I suggest keeping all your kit in ring binders etc. sorted into categories (I am sure you already do ). While of course your appearance doesn't matter a great deal keep in mind that people with a higher opinion of you generally do a better job of your things, clean shaven well presented I had nothing but confidence going into the little booths and this in turn makes the interviews easier, if your nervous the person behind the desk is going to wonder exactly why.

It is also worth noting that as of yesterday and perhaps a few days ago, "Camp America" people are queuing up before the line splits into two (Citizens and then Visas) you can bypass these, just go and speak to one of the officials in yellow dayglo coats. Whatever you do, do not remark to the armed police that he's got a 15 round shorty, or that the mp5 he's carrying just doesnt have the power these days, and definately don't remark that he's holding it like a (*&$" they have a sense of humor at least.

Overall a good experience, marred by the fact that as of writing this I havent slept for more than 29 mins in three days and the incredible amount of walking around London, if your making a day of it, bring a friend along and do not let the courier service short change you ><
