It wasn't conservatives who voted, it was the IOC. Obviously they too share a number of the conservatives concerns. I find cynical pride in knowing the rest of the world shares my personal sentiments about Chicago and various other has-been dilapidated US cities.

Maybe if people didn't waste so much belittling those trying to point this out, calling them anti-American, you would wake up and smell the coffee; since now you're forced to taste the reality. Realize that ghetto and thuggery rap is not cool in other developed countries. Rio won the bid because the Olympics have never been hosted in SA. Not to mention they put up $11 billion for infrastructure alone, compared to Chicago's embarrassing $1 billion. Heck, China spent $40 billion. It really says something that people prefer an event be hosted in a 2nd world country, rather than hosting it in the US.

Heck I'd rather be in Rio than Chicago. I saw all of the thugs that came out of the woodworks during the inauguration. It would be the same embarrassment but on an international scale in Chicago.

The Olympics were a huge economic boom to Sydney. Even the commonwealth games were a huge success for Melbourne in 2006. If you have the right type of city, not some Atlanta Georgia (1996) or Chicago #######, it's a huge benefit and not to mention a huge advertising boost for tourism. Of course for the US it's a different story as people don't believe in public anything or modernizing infrastructure, let alone cities. So I guess on one hand some are right, considering Americans neither care about tourism nor improving their cities. After all, the people are so rich that the country does not need those income streams. Who cares what people think about our third world cities and infrastructure right? Now to more important stuff, steelers were awesome this weekend..

70's and even 80's were a different era, so I wouldn't even bother looking at that as a comparison.

I don't know about that.

I think we need to compare American cities to European cities, starting with St Louis. Once you do that, only then will you see why they don't want them here. My argument about obama is that his US star power has no effect to the 95% of the world that does not live here. I actually wish you guys saw it for what it is, rather than just hating on Europe. I mean come on dude, St Louis is dump, as are most other American cities. Well all know white flight was the cause but it still doesn't change that our cities are embarrassing and starting to resemble 2009 Chernobyl.
