  1. 1. If you lose your job during this recession and cannot find work for awhile, what will you do, if your spouse or child needs life saving surgery? (assuming you can only do one of the following)

    • I have enough money in savings to cover all expenses for my family, including health insurance premiums for at least a year
      23
    • I have extended family who could help me pay for COBRA until I'm back on my feet.
      7
    • Only the strongest survive - it is their time to go anyway.
      3
    • I would accept state or federal sponsored health insurance, even if I disagree with it in principal, for the sake of my spouse or child.
      34
    • I will raise the money myself through charitable donations.
      0
    • I will pray to God for a miracle and ignore the doctors' orders.
      2
  2. 2. Do you currently have health insurance for your entire family?

    • Yes, through my employer
      56
    • I recently lost my coverage from a job loss (yours or spouses).
      2
    • Yes, I have to buy my own policy.
      3
    • No - I choose to pay with cash.
      1
    • No, my employer doesn't provide me any and I cannot afford to purchase my own at this time.
      7
  3. 3. How much do you estimate you've spent over the last 12 months on health care for your family, including insurance premiums?

    • Less than $5,000
      51
    • Between $5,000 - $10,000
      12
    • Between $10,000 - $15,000
      5
    • More than $15,000

I couldn't vote either so I'll type out my responses for you instead.

If I lose my job that would be a qualifying life event and we'll immediately go to my wifes coverage. Barring that, I can pay COBRA for the maximum 18 months allowed and barring that, there's extended family. It'll be a financial hit but it's totally doable.

As for the other two questions, my current insurance is through my employer; for the last question, less than 5k.

Results are very good, no wonder most VJers don't want health care reform.

It's a bit off the national norm. If you go with 45 million uninsured, that is about 15% of the US population. Right now the poll is showing 10% of the poll respondents uninsured.

Right. But according to FactCheck.org:

* Twenty-six percent of the uninsured are eligible for some form of public coverage but do not make use of it.

* Twenty-one percent of the uninsured are immigrants ... that figure includes both those who are here legally and those who are not. The number of illegal immigrants who are included in the official statistics is unknown.

* Twenty percent of the uninsured have family incomes of greater than $75,000 per year

* Forty percent of the uninsured are young ... speculation that they pass up insurance because of their good health is unjustified ... many young people lack insurance because it's not available to them.

People eligible for existing programs can enroll in them, and people making over 75K can purchase private insurance of some kind. Uninsured young people (18 million) and uninsured immigrants (9 million) are 27 million.

We can choose not to cover illegal immigrants (would be a bad policy choice, but we make those all the time) and assume that knocks 2 million off, you're down to 25 million.

So the question becomes, if we're assuming our existing insurance model is worth keeping (which it seems we are since single-payer is off the table), how large of a program do we really need to cover 25 million people?

That's some funky overlapping statistics you got there, AJ. Add them up and they come to 107%.

You don't have an option for "I'd let the hospital do the procedure and pay them $10 a month for the rest of my life".

I would have no problem whatsoever with expecting a hospital to do their job.

I would definitely go this route if it were possible, but wouldn't you just lose your house, savings, etc. first?

We currently have health insurance through my husband's employer, but we want to retire at age 60, so we are not sure what we'll do for health insurance at that time. We are planning to move back to Canada.

Nope.

You negotiate with the hospital for payments.

But doesn't income factor into that payment amount? So, when you do go back to work, you'd have a huge payment to make?
