A good place to begin is here :

And Welcome to VJ!

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

All my friends and family kept pressuring me to get a lawyer, but as long as you read everything carefully and use this site for questions that you have you can easily do it yourself and save a lot of money.

My suggestion is that if you read the guides, examples, embassy reviews....and.....pretty much the whole forum....you can easily do it yourself as many here have done. This is my suggestion only.

PEACE............

When you love someone from the bottom of your heart; so much that you are willing to give your life for your loved one, time and distance takes a backseat. Only love prevails. And with love in you hearts you can overcome anything.

This question will get a lot of answers, mostly negative towards lawyers.

VJ is all about DIY. For the most part a lawyer will give you a questioner that you fill out, and then the lawyer transfers your answers to the appropriate forms, something that you can do yourself.

Unless there is something complex in your or your fiancee's background a lawyer may be un-necessary.

If a lawyer tells you that they can make the process go faster, RUN-AWAY! They CANNOT.

Pretty much everyone here is in favor of doing it yourself. There are some exceptions. If you or your fiancee have ever been in the United States illegally, or have been subject to deportation, or have been refused entry to the United States, or have a criminal background, or if there is any other complicating factor in your case, then you should seriously consider a lawyer.

We haven't used a lawyer yet, even though it was strongly suggested to me to do so, and everything has gone quite smoothly so far. My interview at the consulate is on June 23rd, and even the letter from them for everything that I need is very easy to follow. Like it's been suggested, read the guides so you know what to expect every step of the way, and therefore be prepared well ahead of time. That way..no surprises!!

Welcome to VJ!! We're all here to support you. :star: Best wishes for your journey!

Unfortunately I hired a lawyer before I found this site and by then all the paperwork had already been sent to USCIS. Bottom line is, I would NEVER hire a lawyer and never will when it comes to immigration. I have learned more here and so many of my questions were answered through this site, than my so-called lawyer would have known or answered with such speed. For the next step of our journey (AOS, EAD and AP) I will ONLY use the forums on this site, never again a useless immigration attorney that charges thousands to fill out paperwork that I could do it myself (after all, the documentation has to be provided by me anyway). ;-)

That's my 2 cents, but the decision is up to you.

Interview can take place at the consulate in the country of residence, so if you are resident in a different country other than home country, you can specify that the interview takes place where you are living.

Note: when it does get to the interview stage you will need a police cert from every country you have lived in longer than a year since age 16.

After spending months trawling through the VJ forums DIY is by far the best way forward. Especially if you feel pain by the thought of spending large amounts of money on something you can honestly do yourself. with the help of these guys.

Over time you will become more versed in the ways of the visa.

I nearly went the lawyer route and by jingo I am glad I didn't. Those guys are earning money for old rope.

That and the cost of the visa itself is not cheap when you include things like the i-129f charges.. postal charges, medicals, immunizations and so on and so on. I dare not even clock up how much we have spent on this so far but its worth every penny. :D

I would gladly contribute to VJ's upkeep

Bottom line, the lawyer turns it all over to a paralegal or clerical employee to fill in the blanks after you fill out a questionnaire. You don't really get a lawyer's attention nor even a lawyer's review of the paperwork before it is sent along. Unless of course you have some unusual legal situation.
