Those of you who love the health systems in Europe and Canada should go live there instead of insisting that we change our way here. They've already got what you want. Let them share it with you. That's easier than trying to convince us to agree with you. :P

Yes, PH, I don't have health insurance. I pay as I go, and I don't want to be forced to pay for others.

I'm not all that keen on the share of defense spending in relation to total government spending, yet, Constitutionally, the primary duty of the federal government is to protect our sovereignity and interests within our borders and throughout the globe. That's gotta cost a lot.

Define "promote the general welfare". I bet it don't mean what you think it means. :devil:

I am not a cafeteria Constitutionalist, Steven, but I have read the Constitution, its founding documents and the Federalist Papers, among other essential references. I stated before that I sat at the knee of a close relative who was a Supreme Court historian, gaining insight to the workings, history and even the building in ways the general public does not.

I also wonder if you know what "general welfare" means, in context of Constitutional duties. I know that you didn't do your homework before posting. Instead of quoting the preamble to the Constitution, which states the goals of the body of the document, and does not achieve the force of law, you actually meant to refer to Article 1, Section 8, which is the appropriate clause one would have to examine in depth to attempt to define the permissions given, how they are to be applied, and between which parties - the States or the general populace. To this day, the clause is legally ambiguous and awaiting overdue legislative fiat.

Article 1, Section 8

The Congress shall have power

To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

To borrow money on the credit of the United States;

To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization, and uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the United States;

To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;

To provide for the Punishment of counterfeiting the Securities and current Coin of the United States;

To establish Post Offices and Post Roads;

To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries;

To constitute Tribunals inferior to the supreme Court;

To define and punish Piracies and Felonies committed on the high Seas, and Offenses against the Law of Nations;

To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;

To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years;

To provide and maintain a Navy;

To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces;

To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;

To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings; And

To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.

Why isn't she moving to the UK?

It's something to think about you know.

Well we decided together a while ago what would be best for both of us, we weighed up the pros and cons of both countries, standard of living, family etc etc......and at this moment in time we decided it would be best for us if I moved to the States. That's not to say her moving to UK isn't an option, maybe in the future perhaps. :) Oh and go for single-payer health care, HR676!

I wonder how much social crime (and worse) is down to the fact that so many people are not treating their mental health issues due to the high cost and lack of insurance?

There's that 3 year old killed and the mother ostercised by her community. It's understandable of course, but it seems very likely to me that she was suffering from PPD and, or another stress related anxiety disorder. There is no need for things to go this far if only people had access to proper care.

American crime rates are because this is America. This country has always had a less controllable and less pliant population than Europe. Crime is just a natural byproduct.
