Car insurance

Ok peepz, question. Our car insurance from Canada (AllState) will run out soon. Questions are:

1. Which companies do you recommend?

2. How's the payment game? In Canada we used to pay every 3 months.

3. I don't drive, but want to be in the insurance (thinking ahead of time for removing conditions in 2007), how does that work?

Advise is greatly appreciated!

By 'don't drive' do you mean 'choose not to, but licensed' or 'not licensed?' If you're a licensed driver and in the household, most states require that you be added to the policy. Before C. got a CT license, though, I added him to the policy as a 'spouse', so his name was on it even though he wasn't covered by it directly at that point. So you can probably get your name on it either way.

We went through GEICO. Their policy is for six months, with the option to pay it every two (it's more expensive that way.)

We were on State Farm and just recently switched to Geico.. it honestly saved us 30% on our car insurance..

Biggest difference I see is cost for liability insurance. I don't think you can get million dollar liability here, or if you can it would cost so much no one would.. at least that's what hubby says.. We carry very little insurance.. just enough to be legal, which scares the beegebers out of me, but we pay SOOO much for it!!

They give us a 6 month policy at a time (which is strange I think = i'm used to a yearly policy) and we pay each month for it.

We also have renters insurance, so if you have house insurance/renters insurance/ car insurance, it does pay to keep it all at the same place and they often will give you a discount for having a couple of policies with them.

State Farm was unwilling to "work" with us and said.. well if you get in an accidet with Geico and your premium goes up then you can always come back.. Gah! Some people's children!

You can be added to hubby's policy at any time.. We just added me when I got here in the US and we were "official" like.

I have Electric Insurance which has been pretty good though I am bit pissed that they raised our rates this year. No accidents but a speeding ticket a few years back which might be the culprit. Anway, we have a yearly policy and pay monthly but I know a few places (I think Progressive) which offers a lower rate if you can pay all at once. We have 2 cars and I think we are carrying a $100,000/$300,000 policy with either $250 or $500 deductibles depending on the car for less than $75 a month. And I have been meaning to call and see if we can switch over our Renter's Insurance from State Farm and see if that lowers our rates a bit.

2. I don't remember what he pays but I think they offer semi-annual payment plans.

3. Len, You don't need a car to drive people crazy. I would wait until you're licensed in WA or have Bren put you on his policy for limited use (he'd be the primary). Go with a low deductable if you can afford it.

We found that we got a very good price through them (about $400 per annum, total) due to the fact that our car is paid off and that we took out the bare minimum insurance, and we only own the one. Given that Connecticut is about the craziest state in the nation in terms of insurance, we're pleased.

I've been pretty happy with American Family, but it is mostly because their local agents who I deal with are so nice. Payment schedules---I think most companies will give you options. I have to renew my policy every 6 months, but they give me a few differnt choices for billing (monthly, or every 3 months or all at once, I think).
