Sigh. I was at the local tag office earlier today. They had sent me my Florida car title in miles instead of kilometers. There was a really rude and nasty clerk "helping" me who insisted that miles and kilometers were exactly the same thing and "what was my problem". She then took me out to my car and demanded that I "prove" to her that the odometer reading was in kilometers. This was after she "guaranteed" that "ALL Fords are built exactly the same way." This left me having to explain that Canada was on the metric system and not the US system of measurement. Even after I pointed out to her the letters of the alphabet which were arranged in such a way as to read "km/h" on the display, she still insisted that it didn't prove it wasn't miles. As I quietly sighed and was about to request the assistance of a supervisor, she stalked off. Ten minutes later she was back and very friendly. She must have changed places in the back room with her evil twin.

I was told that the original image of the document which Mildred, the car import specialist, had completed was not yet available but, once they could verify online that it was in kilometers (huh? can't you just ask Mildred?) they would reissue my car title with the correct information. I won't hold my breath.

Oh! This made me laugh - of course I wouldn't have been laughing if I had been standing there with the evil twin!

In my local paper back in Canada, they regularly posted the different 'excuses' drivers had given for speeding as a sort of public interest article. Some of them were hilarious, but there were far too many posted from American drivers insisting that they weren't even going the speed limit - 100 mph - mistaking the 100 km/h postings. Big Sigh.

I feel your pain, Delicia. I've told the dealerships doing the maintenance on my car about kms-vs-miles till I'm blue in the face. It goes in one ear and out the other. I just convert everything to what it should be and show up then. Then factor in the fact that I run synthetic oil as opposed to organic. Even though I've told them that too. Whatever. lol

I blame the American education system.

Although I find it very interesting that cars manufactured for the US have the speedometer in Mph and Kph. As a matter of fact in my Toyota I can switch the odometer to Kilometers if I like but the numbers go up to fast. :)

Wiz

ever since Canada went to the metric system, the speedometer has displayed both mph and kph regardless of whether the car was manufactured for the CDN or US markets - the only difference is which set of numbers is most prominent. as for your Toyota being able to display the odometer in either miles or km, that's a pretty new feature not all makes/models have it. my husband has an 06 Mustang that does not have this ability (to switch between miles and km on the odometer), but yet we rented a new PT Cruiser that was able to do this if i recall correctly...

Krikit - next time you go to the tag office, tell the lady that if miles and km are exactly the same as she claims, why do the numbers on the speedometer (for mph and kph) not match up? of course, she'll probably accuse you of putting in a phoney gauge cluster or something stupid like that... some people, there's just no reasoning with them
