My husband and I are planning to fly to Rhode Island next months..just a national flight so I won't need AP or anything, just my drivers license.

I was wondering though...do I still need to carry any other papers with me, like my passport or any document that proofs my legal status in the country?

Always have your foreign passport with you to prove legal presence in USA As well as a copy of AOS NOA1. You are supposed to have the I-94 card with you while in USA as a Non-Immigrant.

You do not have to legally carry anything with you while in the US other than some form of photo ID and an EAD or State DL is good enough.... the police do not have the right to ask you about your status unless you have been arrested....

For domestic travel all you need is photo ID...

Hmm...I definitley know I don't need the passport to travel, but yes, I have also read somewhere that I'd need some evidence of my status such as the NOA1, but I would think to othat my EAD would proof my status as a pending LPR?!

Ok, not trying to be a smartass...but does "in the applicants possession" mean, I physically have to have it on me?

If it is at home in my passport it is still in my possession...

I would think in possession means in your possession, and you can immediately produce it if asked for, if it is back home, or in a safe deposit box it is not in your possession.

One person posted the other day that they were approached while they were on a bus by and the bus was stopped by CBP and asked for these documents, he did not have them in his possession, and ended up having a bigger problem. Many areas in the USA especially near the Canadian and Mexican borders have routine CBP stops, and they can and do ask for papers.

Better to be safe, I live in one of those border areas, and my wife carries it when we travel, even by car.

I have always carried my US passport when flying even domestic, it is an excellent form of ID, the airlines prefer it.

If your passport still has maiden name, book flights in maiden name.

Eek, my hubby already booked te tickets under my married name because I will use my DL...don't think that will be a problem, after all it is only a national flight.

Next time I go back to Germany I will certainly remind him to get the ticket in my maiden name.

There's no problem using a DL or other ID for internal flights. I never use my passport unless I'm travelling abroad.

My husband and I just got back from Atlanta. I had him carry his passport. I also brought our letters from USCIS (NOA1, etc). However, all the airline needed was some ID and the passport or a DL would suffice.
