I followed tthe links from the US Embassy in Bangkok since I am doing a K-1 that will require filing the I-134 form. There link connected me to the I-864 form. You must earn 125% of the Poverty guidelines, not just meet the amount in the guidelines.

Assets can include equity in property such as home ownership or owning land outright. It includes savings accounts, CDs, stocks, bonds, mutual funds. Do not include a car or anything where you cannot generally access the money or take out a loan against the asset or sell the assets fairly easily.

The Embassy/Consulate will usually defer to the guidelines on the I-864 (even though you'll be using the I-134).

In short - if you're active duty military, you can use 100% of the Fed. Pov. Guideline - or 125% for pretty much everyone else.

  • What is/will-be your household size?
  • Are you earing that much (if not, what is your shortfall amount)?

Ummm they're BOTH correct. They both have exactly the same info except the top one lists a "1" person household which the second link has excluded and there's is a $1 difference between them. Other than that.. they're EXACTLY the same just laid out differently...

Re Assets: "Assets may supplement income if the consular or immigration officer is convinced that the monetary value of the asset could reasonably be made available to support the sponsored immigrant and converted to cash within one year without undue harm to the sponsor or his or her family members. You may not include an automobile unless you show that you own at least one working automobile that you have not included"
