A bronze statue of a young Barack Obama in shorts and a T-shirt — and what appears to be a Nobel medal around his neck — has been erected at a park in Jakarta, Indonesia, near the school where the future U.S. president studied as a child, according to news reports.

The likeness of a 10-year-old Obama — his hand extended with what appears to be a butterfly resting on it — cost $10,600 and now stands in a corner of Menteng Park, according to the Jakarta Globe and AP.

A paraphrased quote by Eleanor Roosevelt is inscribed on the statue’s base: "The future belongs to those who believe in the power of their dreams," reports AP.

“The statue is being erected to inspire Indonesian children and help them remember that they can be whatever they set their hearts on,” Ron Mullers, chairman of the Indonesia-based Friends of Obama Foundation, explained to the Globe.

The statue is set to be officially unveiled by Jakarta's governor Thursday.

Very appropriate.

When the Obama statue tarnishes and is covered in bird poop we'll have a strong resemble to Obama the adult. It's the Dorian Gray effect on the sitting president.

False idol? I am not sure I get why. Whatever you think about Obama's politics, he is the elected president of the USA and that is an achievement in itself. To deny that is pretty bizarre, whether one concludes he is, or isn't 'qualified', one likes or dislikes his politics or whether he should or shouldn't have also gained a Nobel prize for peace. Not many people get elected to be president and being one is not a qualitative statement.

Dorian Gray's picture aged and disfigured while Dorian himself remained looking young and in perfect health, the picture wasn't disfigured by pigeon poop. It's quite an allegorical tale. Whether Obama is tainted by his experiences in a very powerful political position, only time will tell but I doubt this statue will bear witness to it.

The school wants to commemorate the extraordinary success of a former student for the inspiration of the new - not too hard to understand.

Of course the jerks and moaning old gits on VJ get bent out of shape about it. Pricks.

Don't worry. It will get funnier when the statue is dragged off its pedestal during the next anti-American riot in Jarkarta and beaten with shoes.

the computer's fault

It should be duly noted that the US is shitty for not being proud of themselves regardless. In fact, anybody who's black and being idolized will always gets the poop. Shows the true identity of some people.

It must be terrible to have a president that is liked and respected in other countries around the world, first the Nobel Prize, now a statue - what's next!?!?

Certainly respected at home... its just that the losers are being more vocal this time about their inability to accept their political philosophy fueled in large part the mess they're griping about all along.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I'm not worried.

I do wonder why you seem to care so much about a statue in a foreign school.

Again - could you be taking it a mite too seriously? Not to mention personally as well.
