Some of the apartment complexes and used car lots in Houston don't even look like they are located in the USA. LoL

How's that for assimilation!

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

There have been a few times where I have taken Olga a different way and I see a Mexican flag flying on a house or business, haven't figured out which it is yet...also one of our hotels (clarion, I believe) has a Mexican flag flying above it...this one is just up the street from Olga's English class.

A lot of people fly flags of the country they are from. In Minnesota, many people are decendent from European immigrant groups. Occasionally you will see people flying flags of the country their relatives were from, even if they have never been there.

Dang, the imbedded video player mucks up my router >(

Anyway I went to the news stations website and saw the outrage, while flying the Mexican Flag over the American Flag (as the Nevada ACLU points out) is not ILLEGAL, it is VERY disrespectful.

I feel it depends where the flag is being flown and by whom.

If an individual homeowner is flying the flag of their home country, then that's fine. I have no problem with it. That's their home and they are free to do as they wish, so long as they aren't breaking the law or possibly breach whatever contract they may have with a homeowners association (if one was required to sign).

Where I get angry is when business owners begin flying flags of foreign countries. Yes, it is their business; however, they aren't selling their product (solely) to that country and they are stationed within the United States. If the company in question was created within American borders, then it should only fly the U.S. flag. The one exception to this rule might be if it was a hotel, in which case, flying flags from multiple countries would probably endear it to travelers wishing to stay there on vacation.

If the company was not created in the U.S., but has come to the U.S. to operate (most likely as a branch of the larger main company, which is still located in the home country), then I could also understand flying the original country's flag. It would be a nod to where the company was created. However, I would also expect that whatever company did this would also fly the U.S. flag as well (at an equal height) since they would be operating inside American borders.

As far as apartment complexes go... once again, I don't have a problem if whoever is flying the foreign flag is an individual homeowner. If the owner of the apartment complex is flying the foreign flag, then yes, I would be a little annoyed -- especially if they refused to fly the U.S. flag. Honestly, I don't even see a reason why an apartment complex would even need fly a flag for their entire property. Let their individual tenets decide if they want to fly a flag and of what nation.

Next up? What about schools? It would depend on the school. If it was a public school (and therefore state-funded), I could only see two flags flying over that school: The U.S. flag and that school's state flag. That's it. I don't care if some public school's class roster is 99.9% Hispanic, they are not in Mexico (or any other country) and since the school is state-funded (i.e. our tax dollars), it had damn well better have our country and state's flags over it. The situaton is a little different if it's a private school, since that's more like a business and could, effectively make the argument that since it's not state-funded, is free to do what it wants (within the confines of the law) in order to satisfy the student body. If that meant flying a foreign flag, then they might be able to get away with it.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

There's a so-called British pub around here (it's pretty good too!) and they fly two flags: The U.S. and UK flags on two separate poles at equal heights. That shows that the pub is supposed to be "British" while acknowledging the establishment is situated inside American borders. That setup gives the proper amount of respect to both countries.

I think it's all superficial nonsense. JMHO.

It depends how important a value you consider nationalism.

I don't see it as in issue of "nationalism or patriotism" so much as one of respect. When you're in someone else's home, you show some respect for their culture, their rules, their laws and their ways of doing things. You don't trample all over them and do whatever you feel like doing. ;)

The church where I got married flies the flag of the Vatican, which is not a democracy! Down the street here there are Italian flags in the historic little Italy section! And the Irish pub! The Irish pub! Cead mille failte!
