CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- An Ohio man was arrested after allegedly refusing to leave his room at the Hampton Inn and spitting on a police officer.

Charleston Police officers were called to the hotel on Virginia Street West on Wednesday after David Clark Schlotter, 49, of Richmond, Ohio, refused to leave his room an hour after checkout time, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.

Hotel employees repeatedly asked him to leave but he refused, the complaint said. They had to use bolt-cutters to cut the chain lock to gain access.

The room was in such a mess that it could not be rented out as scheduled that day, according to the complaint.

Employees contended Schlotter owed the hotel for another day because he stayed in the room past checkout time. Schlotter refused to pay, and Patrolman A.T. Kuhner escorted him from the property.

The hotel then pressed charges of fraudulently obtaining lodging and trespassing, and a warrant was issued.

Patrolman M.F. McMicken located Schlotter the next day in the 100 block of Lee Street East. Schlotter spit on McMicken as he approached, according to the complaint.

McMicken attempted to handcuff Schlotter, who began to fight, the complaint said. McMicken subdued Schlotter and took him to police headquarters for processing.

Schlotter is being held at South Central Regional Jail.
