I'm being a bit ambitious and bought myself a sewing machine. Now I just I have to figure out how to use it!

Does anybody out there sew? Any tips?

I'm going to try and sew a little bean bag to start with... how hard can a square be? lol.

I've been surfing around and found some pretty good sites.. I'm also trying to make sense of the owner's manual that came with the machine!

I can't wait to get home and try it tonight. I know how to sew by hand; I'm making my daughter's first Christmas stocking. I've been working on it for ages now (Ask me how I feel about sequins right now! ) so I was sorely tempted to try a machine since future projects only threaten to be bigger.

I've been sewing for a few years... Couple of suggestions... go slow to start until you are comfortable going a bit faster.. Check out your local library to find a book on sewing (Reader's Digest has a great one) Also, practicing on scraps of fabric is a good idea until you learn to control the fabric... (thats what we did in my home ec class years ago in school) I'm sure you'll be fine! also, www.craftster.org is a great site for sewers and other crafty ppl! Good luck!

I tried my sewing machine!! It took me over an hour to get it set up... (the directions assume you know things about dogs and feet.. :jest: )

I managed to sew a pillow together with some scrap fabric. It looks like I was drunk sewing it! but at least the two pieces of fabric stick together.

Hopefully I will master this soon.. I dream of making my own clothes... or at least the occasional Halloween Costume.

That's how I got interested in quilting. I was practicing on scraps and one thing led to another and before long I was making baby quilts (still my favorite). I was self-taught so I made a lot of mistakes, but I seem to learn better that way. (haha) Many sewing/craft stores offer sewing classes. Maybe you could look into that. You can find all kinds of stuff on te internet also. That's where I get a lot of my ideas. Good luck and have fun!!!!! Post pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took Home Ec in Junior High- I wish I would have applied myself more at sewing. I enjoyed using the machines but I hated the all the pinning and pattern stuff. I made my mandatory nightgown and T-shirt and that was the end of that.

Now I realize it would be a great skill to know.

Mel uses the sewing machine when he needs sew. I can't even remember how to thread one.

Mel made all the curtains for one of his old girlfriends apartment while they were dating- I have heard that story a few times.

I took sewing in Home Ec in high school (that was like...yikes! 30 some odd years ago!). While waiting for my GC, I was bored, and saw a few crafts in a magazine that I'd like to try, so bought a sewing machine! I like you tried some scraps and then saw a cool pattern for a large drawstring bag that I'd thought I'd make. It was a lot harder

to do than I thought! I made a bag for a game of my FIL's that was in a box that got wet. It is a large wooden football/bean bag game he bought. It was like 4 feet by 3 feet! I made a large bag for it, and a smaller bag for the bean bags, in his favourite NFL team print (Chicago Bears). He was really pleased with it. So was I!!

I don't know that I want to sew clothes, in fact, that's what turned me off of sewing so many years ago! I'm going to maybe do more sewing for crafting, alterations maybe. I'd like to do some quilting too, but need to look into a beginners class.

Best of luck in all your sewing projects!!

Ihave been sewing since I was 5, my grandmother taught me how to sew by hand and then I got my first machine when I was about 9 or 10. I have made quilts; I make all my moms curtains, and alter most everyone’s clothes that I work with. One tip for you is to practice sewing using a piece of lined paper. Sew down the lines of the paper so that you can learn to sew straight. Once you get the feel of the machine start using a cotton or felt type fabric for your first project becuase they're easier to sew and wont move around to much when your feeding it through the machine.

Send me any questions you might have

Good luck and happy sewing.
