Yet, Charles needs to travel a little more in the Americas as I have to answer his own trip around the hemisphere.

i'm been to about 18 countries, lived for 15 years overseas and not in the mood to travel to every banana republic in central and south america just to see you proven wrong.

there is no other country that includes "america" in its title.

edited to correct number of years from 13 to 15. 12 in europe, 3 in japan.

To quote another: Why are we arguing again?

You are right about the title. Yet again, what wrong are you so interested in proving me?

I argue right to call based on geography and the silliness of assuming "we" are the only ones with a right to do so just based on our name as a country. In fact, the correct title would have to be something more like "fromamericans" or "ofamericans" to clearly state that its the United States of America and not imply United States = America- which is what those "little minds" bickering over little things like what's in a name. Or its evolution thereof.

People should be accommodated and listened to if they have an opinion about this as again, geography and political/cultural context are different things and need to be separated and understood before jumping any gun to conclude and assume.

Edited to add: banana republic hmmm? Then you wonder why the boasted American term can offend so many out there?

Just looking at the title of this thread...

Isn't the whole POINT of running for office that you're pandering to as many people as you possibly can in the hope that they'll vote for you? I don't see what's wrong with that. They're giving the people what they want. They've calculated that more people want them to have a debate in Spanish than people who will not vote for them just for doing that.

Well, unfortunately some people view anything other than American (English) as simply put... unAmerican... Funny that Republicans with their "Patriotic" baggage would try to capitalize on the Latino vote by using the language many of them so despise. Then again, the more reformed Republican, just as most Democrats, care little of this as the only language and color they see is green.

Its irresponsible to read selectively.

As I embolden my original point of view, not mentioning nor implying taking offense. Conclusion: America is North, Central, and South. Geography 101.

It is. Post #37 explained it in detail.

Two different things we're looking at here- geography vs. inclusionism.

Last time I looked, maps mentioned something more than just America as one political/cultural entity. Just a thought. Other folks, on the other hand, insist in taking ownership in a term that to them identifies themselves- in itself NOT a bad thing as all of us are in fact, Americans. I argue against excluding other Americans: those from geographical America by virtue of arrogance from citizens of the United States of America. Its unfortunate that we here in the USA don't have a more specific term to call ourselves other than a geographical identifier.

Nevertheless, you can call yourself anything you like. American, Mexican, Venezuelan, Bolivian, whatever toots your horn. [;)]

lunchtime

i see little minds can't grasp what has been so clearly spelled out for you. so, maybe after they change the names of those countires to-Mexico, Venezuela, Bolivia of America- then maybe someone (the entire world) will refer to people from those counties as Americans. until then please remove the chip from your shoulder & move on to another pointless arguement.

have a nice lunch.

Thank you "big" mind.

blah blah blah blah

you are welcome :)

It's a waste of taxpayer money to have ballots and election literature in other languages when English is a requirement of citizenship.

Very true.

English is not a requirement of citizenship in all cases.

Language

Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:

have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 15 years and are over 55 years of age;

have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 20 years and are over 50 years of age; or

have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn English.

http://www.us-immigration-attorney.com/citizenship.htm

In addition, many people who were born here and learned english in school don't speak well enough to understand the debates, much less people who are learning it as a second language.

I don't think anyone despises the spanish language. I think some are frustrated that so many people in our country don't speak the same language they do (ie english).

I agree about the green part (mostly...I think Dennis Kucinich is an exception. I'll vote for him like I always do, and as always he'll get a miniscule 2% of the vote. But if you're sick of big money, check him out.)

LOL... chill Charles... Don't offend others when they haven't offended you.

When the continent's name is more inclusionary as to naming oneself- South America vs. United States OF America, then its at worst an equal playing field. Again, my argument is quite specific and clear.

I thought I stated there is no answer to satisfy your question. And in essence I told you so.

A hoot is given when arrogance comes into play.

So, you are the only Americans in the Americas, what is the problem letting other peoples from the Americas who aren't Americans in to your country?

There isn't one?
