In America, the national language is English.

The official languages of the Americas are: Spanish, English, Portuguese, Dutch, French and other minor languages (both native and creole languages).

It always piss me off how you "Americans" call yourselves Americans, even when you're saying that other people from the Americas are not welcome in your country.

Would it make you feel better if we call ourselves US Americans? Seriously, no one cares about the rest of the americas. I thought everyone was aware of that.

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

In a modest town where honest people dwell

--July 22---------Sent I-129F packet

--July 27---------Petition received

--August 28------NOA1 issued

--August 31------Arrived in Terrace after lots of flight delays to spend Lindsay's birthday with her

--October 10-----Completed address change online

--January 25-----NOA2 received via USCIS Case Status Online

It's the colloquial. Relax.

It really does piss him off. He won't even let me use "America" or "American" to refer to the United States or something from it, even though we don't have any other adjective besides American.

No disrespect intended, but that's his problem. People aren't going to suddenly change their colloquialisms for one guy.

#######? I'd say there's bigger issues at hand.

A lot of Europe calls us 'America' - certainly 90% of Brits do.

No one calls Brazilians 'South Americans', do they? No, they are Brazilians!

It's true, but he's definitely not the only person from a country other than the U.S. to give me the "we're all American" thing. Especially in Brazil. I try to take it out of my speech so he doesn't get mad. :)

I remember that in Mexico, actually. A tour guide referred to a church or something as one of the first 'in America'. I had a feeling what he meant, but my smartazz friend yelped out but hey this isnt America... yet. What followed was a conversation that I found quite enlightening.

Geologically, South America became attached to North America only about 3 million years ago.

Hundreds of millions of years ago, South America was attached to Africa.

So technically speaking, South Americans are Africans. They have no right to call themselves Americans.
