How is date on green card determined?

Does anyone know how the date on a green card is determined? I believe this is the date when one becomes a lawful resident (conditional). My insurance company wants to charge me several months of health insurance payments (from the open enrollment date) for my wife even though she just arrived on November 30. I tried to give them the stamped date on her passport but they have told me that they only accept a green card as a "life changing" event. They might allow me to use the green card before we get it if I can prove to them that the date on the green card is the date of entry into the country. Otherwise I will have to pay several months of insurance which I wasn't planning on. Does anyone know about this date and whether it is documented somewhere how it is calculated?

If wife entered the USA on a CR-1 or IR-1 visa then the date is the date of entry, passport has I-551 (Green-card) stamp.

We were married in Colombia earlier this year and then as a U.S. citizen, I returned to the U.S. while we waited for my wife's visa. I didn't want to pay insurance while she was still in Colombia so I left my status as single at least for insurance purposes.

That's a raw deal man, I question the legality of their actions. You shouldn't have to pay to insure her for time she wasn't in the country.

If she was not here in the country, I don't see any reason why you'd have to pay back health care premiums. If she wasn't here, she wasn't here. That person who is telling you this may not know what they are talking about. Sorry

Insurance companies have different policies. Some actually require a SS number. Mine at the time, used her entry to the US as the activating event and required no SSN.

Correct, I was going to mention that but I forgot. I still haven't got insurance on my wife because of not having a SSN.
