Yes lets imagine no religion. imagine no christians in africa digging safe water wells or caring for AIDS patients. Imagine no church's feeding homeless families or giving them shelter. Imagine no church's sending members into the community to help rehab houses for the elderly. Imagine no church going into Cambodia to help with maimed children caused from landmines. Imagine no christians going to Haiti to help feed and house people. Imagine no catholic charity to run orphanages for homeless children. Imagine no church to provide free counsling to the abused. Imagine no ministry to give to the imprisoned. Imagine no christians there to be with the bedridden in hospice. Imagine no churches out in the cold giving warm clothing to the less fortunate. Imagine no Christmas spirit. Imagine no red cross or red cresent. Imagine no religion and those are just a few of the things you will be missing.

Churches don't do all those good things--people do.

Nothing wrong with religion. It's not the source of the world's problems - it's only an excuse.

Actually, nearly all of the world's problems can be directly or indirectly attributed to overpopulation.

China has the right idea with its 'One-Child' policy. I'd like to see other nations follow China's leadership in tackling the single biggest problem in the world.

While religion is insidious and has been responsible for countless acts of; cultural devastation, intellectual suppression, cruelty, murder and various other heinous activities over the centuries: I agree, it is not the root cause of the world's problems.

China is rethinking the one-child policy. They have an entire generation of only children. It's not a pretty picture. I agree that there has to be some sort of population control, but to force everyone to have an only child is not the answer, I think.

Nope, it's still people who do the organizing. Adhering to a similar belief system or philosophy serves to bring people together, but the basis is human activity. Church flyers don't write and distribute themselves. It's all about human motivation. Churches are inanimate structures. If you're defining "church" as the community of believers, then you're talking about people.

Surely you understand the distinction (duh?).

But the people are organizing themselves because of their belief systems. If you are going to bag all religion because of the evil done in its name, you have to bag all the good done in its name as well.

I'm not bagging religion (sorry, I'm not sure if you're using the "general you"), just noting that it is a huge motivator for all types of behavior, good and bad. Some of the posts suggested that churches comprise something other than like-minded individuals with differing reasons for doing good things. Of course people are often motivated to do good works because of religious belief. Some have a sincere desire to help others, but others want to rack up celestial points. I know of plenty of agnostics who volunteer through church-affiliated groups because that's where many charities stem from. Why this is the case is another topic altogether...

I know of several charities, organisations, shelters, etc that are run and funded by groups of people; not churches. We would do just fine without religion or churches...the people would do what the "evil atheists" are doing currently...organising without calling it god's work or looking for brownie points in some non-existent "heaven".

Sanctimonious religious people piss me off. All the "We're so much better than you!" #######.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Here are what others said about religion.

"We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further."

Dawkins

"In Christianity neither morality nor religion come into contact with reality at any point."

They piss me off as well. But the "I'm more intelligent because I'm an atheist" people piss me off as well. Anyone with half a mind has considered that there is no god. It takes more than half a mind to go the next step and consider that there is. Many of the greatest minds in the world in science, literature, philophy, etc., believe in a god or a god-like entity. I'm not one of those great minds, so I'm agnostic. I find it very difficult to believe in god, but I don't see how a person with an open mind can rule out the possiblity. No one knows for sure and people who think they do are just as close-minded as people who don't allow for differences in belief. In fact, a lot of atheist sound a lot like fundamentalists. If you're not an atheist, you are an idiot.

The only thing worth killing over is money and oil.

Everything else is silly and beneath a great civilization such as ours.
