Hi All,

My EAD seems to be taking ridiculously long and every time we call the 1800 number we get a different story and are told to call back after 2 weeks.

So we wanted to find out if contacting your congressman does help.

Also with the time to file for taxes coming up, do I have to have a social security number for my husband to claim me as a dependant on his taxes?

Thanks in advance for all responses.

It certainly wouldn't hurt. I think whether or not it would help would depend on how effective your congressmans office is and the reason for the hold up in your case. If it has been over 90 days, I would also recommend making an infopass appointment...the information they provide is more accurate.

In regards to a social security number (SSN). I'm not sure how to respond the your question. However, I do know that immigrants that are not eligible for a SSN can apply for a tax identification number (TIN) from the www.irs.gov Read up about the TIN, to see if it might help you.

What is your timeline?

Without this we dont know if you have waited a long time or not. If you have not waited for the 90 day timeframe then no do not contact your congressman yet. After 90 days, try a infopass first and they will put in a request for you. The 1800 number does not have access to any information that you do not have, hence it is usually called the mis-information line.

If you do not receive the EAD and then SSN by the time you file taxes , you can apply for a ITIN along with the tax return.

I think if you go over 90 days from the NOA 1 receipt date you can file an info pass.
